Study your maps well, if you miss an exit just take the next one, pull over & study the map again. Stay in the right (supposedly slower) lanes of the Fwy. and don't get rattled. Can you do that? Because you really will need a car. Get your passenger to watch the map & exits with you and DO NOT drive at rush hour!! That would be TOWARD the CITY of LA from 6 to 9 AM and going AWAY from LA from 3 to 6 PM. Sorry, just a fact of life here.

Don't be afraid of traffic - the freeways are much better-marked than you might think, and it's pretty hard to get lost or confused. I know, because I'm extremely good at getting lost and confused, and I didn't manage to do either when I was driving around LA and the surrounding area in January. What I found helpful was going to Mapquest before I left, and getting verbal directions (not maps, which I find hard to read) from point to point. My daughter lives in Glendale and she pointed out that most people have had the experience of almost missing their freeway exit, so they're pretty good about letting you pull into the exit lane in a big hurry. This certainly seemed to be the case. I was able to navigate from Burbank to Laguna Hills and back, and did a lot of driving between Burbank, Hollywood, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Monica, etc. with no problems.

It's California. And unfortunately, the choice was made many years ago that cars are critical to the lifestyle. Trying to use public transportation on a vacation there would be more miserable & inconvenient than any challenges presented by traffic. If the idea of driving around is daunting, then perhaps you should look into an escorted tour. They probably exist (Trafalgar's ? Collette's?).

need a car or look into tours from your hotel. be careful to leave before or after rush hours - leave at 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. and go back before 3:30 or after 6:30. check your maps or talk to people before you head out. i find it helpful if i know the 2 exit names prior to the one i need. that way you know your's is coming up shortly and can be in the proper lane. just stay calm, go the spead limit and if people are in a rush, they can go around you.
