See this site for transportation options:
http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTrave...portation.html
cab: $50-$75 depending on the destination. Since the cab has crossed state lines and cannot return "home" with a fare, a cab in either direction will charge extra to make this trip.

$15 for tolls from EWR? You got scammed.
The cash toll for the tunnels is only $8, and with E-Z Pass it's $6 (except during peak hours).
The turnpike toll is $1.15 to the Holland Tunnel.
So you should have paid $7.15 or $9.15, not $15.

Well now I fell like an idiot and I am also angry! And to think I also gave him a nice tip! Thanks for the heads up! I KNEW that the turnpike toll could not have been that much! Is it possible that they charge rt tunnel fares?
I knew from the posts here that a car service would be cheaper, but I did not arrive by air, but was dropped off at the airport by someone driving to Conn. (We were driving from DC) So had no idea what time I would be arriving at the airport..
I also thought of having him drop me off near the GW bridge, but was not sure of getting a taxi up there...I have now learned by lesson!
I am truly furious, for all the good it does me now! Thanks for the info, Gekko!

In case it ever comes up, the George Washington Bridge has both good commuter bus service and a subway connection. I'm not sure about taxis, but I suspect you could get one. However, that's all on the NYC side. On the NJ side, you can be dropped off at Secaucus Junction train station and take a train into Manhattan for about $3 to $5 depending on the time.

Take a car service.

Their rates are listed at that link. Sometimes they offer coupons on the website.

Thanks for the info. As I said, I did not take a car service because I could not arrange this in advance, not knowing when I would arrive at the airport in Newark..
I am almost tempted to report the overcharge..I have the receipt from the taxi...!

I called to arrange mine from the airport. I was flying standby and wasn't sure which flight I would get on. But, as soon as I knew I called Carmel and they added me to the list. Carmel sends the closest car in the area when you land (not a specific car to meet a specific customer).

Thanks..next time I will do just that! I thought I would have had to wait for a car to come out from Manhattan.
I am quite annoyed, mostly at myself for taking the driver's word for the toll charge! I guess even locals get taken for a ride sometimes!

Sorry to hear about your cab fare. I think that it happens to us all at one time or another. If not with cabs, it will happen with hotels. It seems to be the "Life of Travel."
Has anyone used the "SUPER SHUTTLE" from Newark to Manhattan?
We have used the Super Shuttle for business trips in other cities. We are going to NYC in December for vacation and would like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Any experience with this company is appreciated. Thanks.

Every one of my experiences with SuperShuttle in NYC has been a negative one. I've been driven all over creation for 90 minutes before taking off for the airport, the van has failed to pick me up (twice), and I've been berated by the driver for not tipping enough when he offered a particularly bad ride. I have NOT taken Super Shuttle to or from Newark, however.
I've used SuperShuttle with absolutely no incident in many other US cities and had good service, so my conclusion is that the New York operation is broken. I'd never take that service again.
Just take New York Airport Service, which goes to the west or east side and then a taxi, subway, bus, or a short walk to your hotel.

Well - unless you mean 4 am any way is safe.
The cheapest is to take the subway to Penn Station, get NY Transit to Newark and shift the the EWR Air Train.
If you prefer less toting around of luggage then take the subway - or a cab - to Port Authority and get the EWR airport bus there.

I guess I really wanted to check to be sure the carmellimo or the "7" one were okay. I'll be staying very near Grand Central Station too...it doesn't have to be the cheapest.....I just don't want to pay more than is necessary too. After reading some of the comments on this post, I just wanted to be sure.
