Buying a swimming suit in Hawaii
I'm going to Maui in a week and I need a new swimming suit. Any suggestions of places to look for one in Maui? Will it cost me a fortune to buy one there? I didn't think to look for a new one this summer since our trip to Maui was not planned yet. Thanks for any suggestions!

Every hotel has a shop that sells suits but you can be sure they'll be expensive.
I don't know about you, but it always takes me time to find the right one and I would hate to waste precious island time to shop for a suit.
If there is any way you can buy one before you go, I'd do that -- what about LL Bean online? If you aren't sure of fit or size, I think they allow you to return it. Also, try Land's End or chadwicks.
Hope this helps...

There are quite a few places to buy swimsuits - but the shops in the resorts will be really expensive. There are several shops in Lahaina, and you often can find swimsuits in surf shops too.
However, I agree that it takes time (for me, at least) to find the "right" swimsuit - and this is from someone who lives in Hawaii where swimsuits are available year round.

I would rather have a root canal compared to trying on bathing suits, lol.
Actually though I have found wonderful bathing suits in Hawaii, but always on Oahu. It does take time however but than they are a nice memory of your trip. So it depends I guess on how much shopping time you have. Best wishes.

what about the mall right by the airport? the giant one with the starbucks and the elevator?
i bought a lot of things there and there were a few women's shops on the ground floor.
i also found a great suit i love in the hotel gift shop and it was not more than i'd spend at home and i never spend more than $50 on a swimsuit.
i think it depends on your age (or your size?) the younger you are, or the skinnier and the easier it is to find one that fits/ the more choices you'll have. oh, and i also bought a suit at honolua surf shop in thea back they have sale items all the time.

I also noticed Hilo Hattie online has very little compared to the stores, especially the one on Nimityz Fwy in Oahu. Probably a good thing, or I would spend even more $$$ than I did while there!

Here's my two questions, that determine the answer:
1#- How much time are you willing to take away from your vacation to spend shopping for a suit?
2#- What is your age and size? Point being, can you just zip into any ole place that has bathing suits and grab one, or do you usually have to try on dozens and dozens (i do) to find a good one.
So my answer... sure absolutely you'll be able to find a swim suit in Maui. How much it costs depends where you shop and what kind of suit you buy.
You've still got a week, check around. Do you live somewhere with shopping? Most department stores have a resort section this time of year. Or look up 'swim suits' in the Yellow Pages, there's a fantastic one near me that does all the suits for swim teams, etc. and they have an absolutely amazing selection of all styles, all sizes, all the time. Also Land's End, but I'm not sure you can move fast enough with mail order if you really only have 1 week.
I think Lahaina, in the town or at Cannery Mall are both good suggestions rather than hotel boutiques since cost is a concern.

If you live in a town with a decent-sized mall, it seems most now have one of those small siwmsuit stores like "Everything But Water" or "Splash."
They cater to the resort wear and cruise crowd who take trips during the winter and need swimwear and cover ups.
I went in one earlier this year and they had a great selection of good-quality suits with well-trained staff.

I used to be like LoveItaly - hated to try on swimsuits - but love buying them from LLBean and Lands End. I must have a couple of dozen swimsuits - and I'm not kidding. They really fit well - and you can pick the type of leg cut you want (hi, med, low), type of backs, cups, colors, etc. The possibilities are endless. I haven't bought a new suit in two years, but it's been from incredible self-control. I always see several I want each year.
I would not take time from my vacation to shop in a store - just me though.
