Bus transportation to/from JFK
Last year we took a shuttle bus from JFK to Manhattan....long, diverted trip. On return to JFK we took a wonderful, comfortable bus from downtown near Grand Central. We can not remember the name of bus depot and would like to use them again for transportation to and from JFK this time. Any idea how we can identify and contact them? Thanks

Mary,
Here's a link to ground transportation at JFK. They should have the bus company you are looking for on this site.
Most likely you boarded the bus to JFK at the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 8th Ave. and 42nd St.

The NY Airport Bus Service has buses that leave from Park Avenue between 41st and 42nd, right outside of Grand Central (which is in Midtown, not downtown). There is a small ticket office right by the bus stop. These are comfortable buses that have storage underneath for luggage.

The last time I took the Airport Service Bus, the larger bus started from PA Bus Terminal & stopped across from Grand Central Terminal (as Suzanne writes) continuing to the airport (w/ stop at Jamaica Sta.). Opposite trip on return.
They also had pickup & dropoff at Penn Station and various hotels, but used smaller buses -- more like the ones used by airport rental car shuttles. I'm sure I could have walked from GCT to PennSta in the amount of time it took for the shuttle, with all the hotel stops & traffic. For that reason, I advise people to find their own means of transportation to/from the bus stop near GCT.
BTW, the address listed in my post above is the mailing address, not the bus stop.

Mary, keep in mind going from JFK to NY, the taxi fare is a flat rate of $35 + toll ($4) & tip. So about $44 total door to door. Don't know how many of you there are, but even if more than 2 & you have to cab from Grand Central to your hotel, the cab might be a better, faster and cheaper option.
Going back to the airport, there is no flat fare-you pay the meter so in traffic, the bus might be better in that direction-but maybe not.
