I could never understand the appeal of the Jersey shore, and I live in New Jersey. With the possible exception of Cape May, most of the towns are run down and cheesy, and populated with people with a bunch of kids with the smarts of the poster above. The beaches on Long Island are much much better.

The Jersey Shore has some nice beach towns, but most are very crowded due to the major cities nearby.
If at all possible, drive a bit south to a beach in the Carolinas. You'll find less people, warmer water and newer accomodations. The rates are similar or less, also.
If you're gonna spend time and money on a vacation, spend a bit more and get the best. JMHO

My perspective as a New Englander who doen't know too much about "the shore" but who has spent each of the last three summers in multiple towns in S. Jersey Shore (Avalon, LBI, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, Cape May, etc)
It's funny to us to hear people from NJ talk about the shore. People from each town call the other town "a dump", but just wait till you see the next town over - it's "classy".
Thus, if you're in LBI, the people we're traveling with will tell me that it's really dumpy here, but it's really much classier in Avalon. When we get to Avalon, it looks exactly the same to me. Don't get me wrong, we have a great time, but it's just funny how the NJ people make such strong distinctions between otherwise very, very similar towns.

As a resident of the Northern Jersey Shore (transplanted from smalltown western PA) , let me say that the attraction here is more of an "attitude" than anything else. It gets in your blood and you can't imagine living anywhere else. Each little shore town has a personality and history which if you know it is quIte interesting. If you don't see it or understand it than you would probably not like it here.
Believe me, we REALLY would like all of you "bennies" (tourists) to stop coming and crowding our roads and businesses.
