The Jersey Shore: beautiful swan or ugly duckling?

x Jun 6th, 2002 06:29 AM

I could never understand the appeal of the Jersey shore, and I live in New Jersey. With the possible exception of Cape May, most of the towns are run down and cheesy, and populated with people with a bunch of kids with the smarts of the poster above. The beaches on Long Island are much much better.

Jersey Girl Jun 6th, 2002 06:38 AM

Ron down and cheesy?

You obviously don't live in or even know about my neighborhood!!

LBI? Please! Try Avalon or Stone Harbor for some class!
ilisa Jun 6th, 2002 06:43 AM

Jersey Girl, he said Long Island, not LBI. This Jersey Girl, however, has spent much time on LBI and loved every minute of it.

The Jersey Shore has some nice beach towns, but most are very crowded due to the major cities nearby.

If at all possible, drive a bit south to a beach in the Carolinas. You'll find less people, warmer water and newer accomodations. The rates are similar or less, also.

If you're gonna spend time and money on a vacation, spend a bit more and get the best. JMHO
Jersey beaches charge a fee but the fleas are free for the taking. As a longtime user of the shore, I speak with some authority.

Jersey Girl Jun 6th, 2002 07:18 AM

I am now typing looking out of my living room window onto the beach at Avalon. Never a flea seen down here. :-)
Avalon has a beautiful beach. I'm heading there next week!
Northern Jersey shore: ugly duckling

Southern Jersey shore: beautiful swan

Jersey Girl Jun 6th, 2002 12:41 PM

Cap has it right!!

The Jersey shore is ok in some towns but the people are too hard to take in any of the towns.

Where do you think, big hair, fake nails, tattoos and multiple piercings come from?

Howitzer Jun 6th, 2002 05:12 PM

Beautiful swan or ugly duckling? Neither..you can compare it to a pigeon. Metropolitan..tame..easygoing..and best of all, close enough to enjoy.
I remember while in OC, NJ, I smelled a rotten eggs smell on the beach. Not too fond of the Jersey shore. I'll stick with a Delaware vacation.

good stephanie,you do that.

huh? Jun 6th, 2002 06:31 PM

Question Stephanie:
where/what is OC, NJ???

bos Jun 6th, 2002 06:49 PM

My perspective as a New Englander who doen't know too much about "the shore" but who has spent each of the last three summers in multiple towns in S. Jersey Shore (Avalon, LBI, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, Cape May, etc)

It's funny to us to hear people from NJ talk about the shore. People from each town call the other town "a dump", but just wait till you see the next town over - it's "classy".

Thus, if you're in LBI, the people we're traveling with will tell me that it's really dumpy here, but it's really much classier in Avalon. When we get to Avalon, it looks exactly the same to me. Don't get me wrong, we have a great time, but it's just funny how the NJ people make such strong distinctions between otherwise very, very similar towns.

As a resident of the Northern Jersey Shore (transplanted from smalltown western PA) , let me say that the attraction here is more of an "attitude" than anything else. It gets in your blood and you can't imagine living anywhere else. Each little shore town has a personality and history which if you know it is quIte interesting. If you don't see it or understand it than you would probably not like it here.
Believe me, we REALLY would like all of you "bennies" (tourists) to stop coming and crowding our roads and businesses.

gc Jun 7th, 2002 06:18 AM

Ah, the Texas coast!

I love the smell of oil slick in the morning!

bc Jun 7th, 2002 06:28 AM

Boxers, definitely.

Jersey Girl Jun 7th, 2002 06:50 AM

In South Jersey we call the tourists "Shoobies". North Jersey calls them "Bennies".

It is a rainy Friday morning and the Shoobies are already arriving with their monster kids!
