Jekyll Island is my suggestion. Home rentals are very inexpensive in the off-season, even for beach front homes. Villas-by-the-Sea, the new Hampton Inn, or any of the other ocean-front hotels are great places to stay.
Close airports: Jacksonville and Savannah.
What to do? Walk on the beach; visit the Historic District; eat at SeaJays and listen to bluegrass; visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center; go kayaking; fishing (either surf, off-shore, in-shore, on on the island ponds); play tennis on 13 Har-tru courts; play golf on 4 real courses and 2 mini-golf courses; view wildlife (by law, only 35% of Jekyll Island is developed, leaving 65% in natural areas chock full of deer, raccoon, birds, squirrels, rabbits, gators, etc.); watch the dolphins play; splurge and eat at Courtyard at Crane restaurant; walk Driftwood Beach and take plenty of photographs; ride on over 20 miles of bike trails; ride horses on the beach; and lots more!
If you go in December, they have great holiday festivities. And in January and Feburary, they have the Island Treasures hunt for glass fishing floats, where the "hide" copies of antique blown glass fishing floats on the beaches for you to find while walking.
Yeah, I'd say Jekyll Island.
