Budget Queen Alaska, I need your help!

We are a group of four adult couples who enjoy hiking all day and eating great food when we get back to the lodge. We want accomodations which are clean, comfortable and have private bathrooms. We do not need luxury. We are in the early stages of planning our trip to Alaska for September, 2006. I have a few questions:
1. Can we take the train to Denali National Park from the airport in Anchorage? We would prefer to avoid having a rental car if possible since our group is so large. Is that an unrealistic idea?
2.We want to be in Denali National Park. From what I have read that is only possible if we are willing to pay incredibly high prices (not criticizing the lodges, here, just noting that most of the prices are simply outside our maximum of three hundred per couple per day including food and lodging). Have I overlooked a great b and b or lodge?
3. Is there a place near the park but not in the area called Glitter Gulch which will meet our needs?
My last trip to Alaska was in 1991 and I gather lots of changes have been made in Denali National Park.

Thank you, Budget Queen.
