Broadmoor - help me pick a room
Any recommendations for a room type at the Broadmoor would be appreciated. They have several classes of rooms but it's hard to distinguish between them. This is for a 50th birthday surprise so I want something particularly nice.
Thanks

One of my favorite hotels....we stayed in a beautiful room, king bed, with a private balcony overlooking the lake--I want to say it was the "west" building--in this building you get the choice of either mountain or lake views--I would choose lake. I hope you enjoy a wonderful visit

Rooms are bigger in the West building, so if that is important to you, go with that. Personally, I find the main building and the "south" addition (attached to the main building) to be my favorites because from there you can have a view of the lake AND the mountains (along with the west section of the hotel).
One caveat: They recently renovated the main building, making the rooms a bit larger, etc. I haven't visited since the renovation but I hear it is very nice.

One of the worst, if not THE worst nights I have ever spent in a hotel was the Valentines Day surpise for my wife several years ago. We stayed in the South Annex, which reminded me of practically any other chain hotel, nondescript furnishings, tiny, old-fashioned sink with no place to set anything, postge sized pillows despite three calls to housekeeping. So waht that there was a phone in the toilet? Don't even ask me about the parking, which was unbelievable! I left feeling that I had gotten the royal screw job, and my comments to the hotel staff were met with disdain, and a "glare over the reading glasses" look. As i recall we paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 for the night. The only good thing about the Broadmoor is the Sunday brunch, which in my opinion is the best I have ever eaten. I would rather stay someplace else and eat there any day.

The Broadmoor is one of the finest hotels in the world. The posting at the bottom of thic chain is off base. The hotel is completely renovating the south building, which will bring it up to the level of all the other rooms. With the south building updated, there won't be a bad room on site. The service and facilities are exceptional; 5 star.

Bobross,
Why are you responding to a post that is almost a year old? Considering jimcolorado stayed there prior to renovations,I find it unfair to call his post offbase. If you have stayed there recently, please post a trip report.

I am responding because I love The Broadmoor and can't imagine what happened with Jim. I wasn't going to mention it, but I figured Jim was some sort of bargain hunter. A room at The Broadmoor for $150 - give me a break! Golf is $275/person. You couldn't get a closet for $150. I stayed (and played golf)there this past weekend (August 2005) and asked what the cheapest room cost -$400. Anyway, no hard feelings but Jim should really give it a second shot, although it will cost a lot more this time - no bargain shoppers.

Bobross,
If you take the time to look at the Broadmoor's website, you will find that a rate of $230 for a classic room is currently available around Valentine's Day 2006. So, if Jim stayed at the Broadmoor several years ago, $150 probably wasn't the bargain hunter rate you claim it to be. Are you implying that guests of the Broadmoor should expect a crummy room if they only spend $230?
You love the Broadmoor - great! Jim doesn't care for it and I appreciate his point of view. I like hearing the pros and cons.
