Don't know about Boston restaurants in particular but where I live about 30 miles north, baked beans are usually offered at breakfast. You might try that if you eat at local places (not hotels). Try to get some brown bread with them.

Here are my suggestions:
Boston Duck Tour
Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market
Boston Common
Freedom Trail
The USS Constitution
Paul Revere's House (in the North End)
While in the North End, have dinner at Mama Anna's and then pick up dessert at Mike's bakery.
If you are driving south to Boston from Kittery, stop in Salem, MA and visit some great locations. The House of Seven Gables is right on the ocean (don't forget the awesome, old candy store across the street), and the Salem Witch Museum.

Sorry that the above poster had a bad experience at Modern's, but I've been going there for almost 20 years and the only thing I've ever been disappointed with there is the line out the door sometimes.
I don't get cannoli very often--I'm a pignoli/mandorle cookie and sfogliatelle guy myself. Modern excels with these items, as does Maria's, and Mike's disappoints.
My preference for Modern Pastry is corroborated by every North End resident I've ever spoken with about the subject.
