Meritage in the Boston Harbor Hotel is great for brunch. Sel de La Terre is really good. Also, Henrietta's Table in Cambridge.
A lot of places don't start serving dinner till 5:30. When I go to a nice place, I like to allow 2 hours to eat. But 1 1/2 isn't bad. you won't be too rushed, but you should let your waiter know you have to leave by 6:30. you should stick to your original idea, go someplace within a 15 minute or so walk of the Garden at 5PM.
