Hi,
We are a group of 5 inlcuding grand parents, parents and a 15 month old toddler plan to make a trip to Boston. Would like to visit Boston but not sure if end of May or the July 4th weekend would be better in term of weather, events, etc.? The hotel & airfare are slightly higher in early July. We can live w/ that. gt;


Would like to come back in mid Sept/Oct in the future to capture the folliage season.

The weather will certainly be more comfortable in May. Both periods are very popular with tourists, and in May the hotels tend to be full of families of kids graduating from the many local colleges.

I personally feel July 4th is a great time to visit Boston! The fireworks are fabulous and you wouldn't need to bundle up while walking around and enjoying the sights, especially around the waterfront. It may be hot but after having had such a miserable winter, 90 degrees sounds wonderful! Of course, this is New England so very hard to predict. May can be really nice too, but some Mays are cold and raw so be prepared. Good luck,

Thanks for your suggestions. Having been living in San Diego, CA for years, I've become spoiled w/ warm/nice weather. Nice climate has been an important factor for my travel planning.

I just answered your last post about stroller versus backpack. Memorial Day will be much less crowded in the city - many people seem to take off for the weekend. But as mentioned above, college graduations may make hotels tough to get. July 4th is great fun, but will be a mob scene - lots of fun things going on.

It always seems to rain on Memorial Day weekend here - but July can be hot and humid. Better chance of good weather in July would be my guess.

PS - we were in San Diego 2 years ago in August and if you ever want to trade places, let me know. We are shoveling out from the one zillionith snow fall of the season here.

Unlike gail, I have given up shoveling, and am i hibiernation mode, relying on Peapod grocery delivery until I see my lawn again.

If you're used to that lovely San Diego weather, then July in Boston could be a shock.

Are you kidding? I have decided to stick around SD since graduating UCSD because of its weather. San Francisco would be our second choice for its metro city's culture & food. Love to visit other metro cities for the great food, service, culture, events, though.

Couldn't handle the humidity of South East Asia or Hawaii very well nor the chill factor of Chicago in April.

Definitely go for the 4th. May is extremely hit or miss even as late as Memorial Day.

I dunno; typical July 4 weather might be problem for someone who had problems with Hawaii's relatively dry and mild temperatures.

Kayla, you might have to choose whether to take your chances with too-cold or too-hot. Very few days in Boston feel like typical San Diego!

Hm... I'm trying to find out the typical pattern of reasonable weather & avoid the extreme one. Humidity is usually the killer for me & may ruin/slow me down on the trip. W/ cold weather, I just layer myself & bundle up as long as the wind does not blow me away. I weigh less than 100 lbs. gt;) and actually felt the wind literally stopped my movement for seconds by the lake in Chicago. That was early April.

I have been in Boston on the 4th and remember it being very warm and humid. If you don't think your group would tolerate heat and humidity well, I'd probably opt for May.

They are having at Street Performers Festival at the end of May!!

Thank you for your extra info! It's a difficult decision; we finally decided to go in May for the Spring bloom, possible better weather (it looks like it rains all year in Boston?) and less crowded. It may be fun for the July 4th wknd w/ the whole week of Independence day celebration, fireworks, but it seems to be high humid & may be like a mob to get around & longer lines @ museums.

Just hope it does not rain the whole 5 full days of our stay. gt;
