My family and I trying to decide if we should go to Boston the first week of March. How is the weather? If it does snow- are attractions still accessible or will be stuck in the hotel? Also, we would also like to go to Cape Cod & Martha's Vineyard...how are these 2 places like during this time of year? If you had to choose 1, which would you choose?

Early March in Boston will be winter. There will probably be snow on the ground, and the temparatures will be in the mid 20's to mid 30's. The city does not close down in bad weather, everything will be open (unless of course there is a very severe storm!).I have never been to the Cape this time of year, I imagine it would be very raw and windy. Both the Cape and Martha's Vinyard will be very desolate, and the beaches may even have snow on them! I would visit the ocean when the weather was a little warmr.

Doug is exaggerating just a little bit. According to the National Weather Service records, the average daily high temperature in Boston during the first week of March is in the 40s, and average nighttime low is in the upper 20s.

Of course, this being Boston, we could vary from that tremendously -- we could indeed be in the 20s or get a snowstorm, but it's just as likely that we'll get temperatures in the 60s, LOL. (Yesterday, we hit 53 degrees.)

I think your best bet is to just plan to come, and check the weather forecast when you're packing. Then ignore it and bring layers and your raincoat anyway. You won't get stuck in your hotel -- the city just doesn't close down more than overnight for a snowstorm -- at least, it hasn't since early February 1978!

Cape Cod can be lovely during the off-season. A walk on the beach is a beautiful adventure, as long as you're dressed warmly (wear your hat, like Mom says). Take a walk along the National Seashore. My kids and I spent February vacation there a couple of years ago and had a fine time. If you have a choice, though, try to visit the cape on the sunniest warmest day you can, just because it will be more beautiful.

My husband and I were in Boston last March. It was sunny and cold...(well we are from Los Angeles so it seemed cold to us!). We loved it, not too many crowds. We did take the trolley (hop on hop off tour, Duck tours not running in March). Enjoyed the New England Aquarium, tons of wonderful food, Quincy Market it was just wonderful.. though I had never before seen how dirty snow could get, actually had never seen snow in a city at all.. so I took photos of it.. found it fascinating..(what can I say? I am easy to impress). But the weather was not damp in the least and made for very pleasant environment.

jc - we just got back from boston and loved it. cold, but no snow. public transportation is great & easy. museums, theaters and shopping were superb. we walked everywhere possible. Copley Sq. has a bunch of fine hotels. Marriott, Sheraton + one other hotel connected to each other and 2 high end malls by weatherproof walkways. 3 T stops (subway) within a block or two. did we miss the cape + mv? nope. we were too busy having fun the city. go. enjoy!

Life long Bostonian here. Weather in March is a crap shoot. Could be cold and snowy or raw and damp, could be starting to feel like spring. You never know. But as said above Boston rarely shuts down because of weather. It will slow down if there is snow but that about all that stops us.

The Cape tends to be 8-10 degrees warmer than Boston. Its a quiet time down there but you can definately go for a walk on the beach. More and more shops and restaurants are staying open year round these days.

Thanks for all of the advice & suggestions. I think we have decided to just stay in Boston since we will only be there for about 4 days. Since most of you have said the Cape and Martha's Vineyard is best during warm weather, we'll have to make another trip out during the summer or springtime. Thanks!
