You can always get tickets for any show at the normal price - you just have to do it in advance fro the official ticket seller (as listed on playbill.com). If you want last-minute tickets to a hit - yes, you will have to pay a premium. but go to a reliable scalper - like stubhub.

We have gone directly to the Box Office twice, July 2011 and July 2012 and they had availability for that night and subsequent nights, $150. per ticket. It's always worth a try
And it was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen..

Friends just got standing-room tickets pretty easily (required about an hour in line), and this was on a Friday afternoon, though granted it was raining lightly. But they had also gotten (and then given way) standing-room tickets for Wednesday as well.
But when they went there were absolutely no tickets at the box office (for all of last week). So, yes, it's always worth asking, but we're entering the heavy tourist season when it's unlikely that you'll actually get a ticket for regular price that way. The show is still consistently sold out.

I just realized I never followed up on this thread (although I did somewhere). I got my SRO tix and LOVED every minute of the show. I'd gladly stand in line all day (although you don't need to) to see it.
