Boeing Tour: Yea or Nay?

We're an active couple in our 40's with one day to blow in Seattle. We've been to Seattle before and have seen/done Pike Place Market, Space Needle, EMP, Ballard Locks, Pioneer Square, San Juans, whale watching, Vic/Van, Olympic Pennisula, Cascades & Mt. St. Helens.

We're thinking about driving up to Everett (from SeaTac) to take the Boeing tour. We love travel & airplanes and thought this would be a fun thing to do. Would appreciate input of anyone who has done this before as well as any other ideas for things to do.

Thanks,
John in Miami

The tour is quite interesting and IMO well worth the trip. The scale of the enterprise (biggest building in the world, for example) is awesome. They now charge admission and the tours fill up fast, so arrive as early as you can.

Even better for airplane fans, though (again IMO) is the Museum of Flight next to Boeing Field in Seattle. It's not as big as the Smithsonian A&S, but I think it's more interesting than the USAF museum in Dayton. Walk through LBJ's Air Force 1, fly a simulator (one that moves - urp), have a look at an SR-71 "mother ship," and dig the very cool (current) exhibition of science-fiction toys and memorabilia from the 1930s on, up to and including the actual prop used for Aniken Skywalker's Pod Racer in Star Wars I (the first "new" one.) Fingers are crossed that the MoF will be one of the lucky winners for a surplus Concorde when BA finishes with them this fall. The museum is building a new enclosed hanger for civilian transport planes - they already have the first 747, etc.) and the Concorde will be a great addition.

Gardyloo is right-on once again (on both issues).

It has been several years (maybe 15) and I was a young teenager and I remember enjoying the Flight museum. You might be able to do both? Boeing tour sounds fun - I'll have to put that on my long weekend list of places to go.

Recently went to Museum of Flight, which BTW isn't that far from Sea-Tac.

Best laugh of the day if not the whole month:

Watching one of the simulators lurching crazily up and down, around, over, side to side, upside down, up and down, and hearing verrrry faint, distant boy's voice from inside: "whoa! whoa! WHOA! whoa!"

As I remember there might be a height restriction on the Boeing tour. Anyone else know?

Don't remember any height restrictions. No cameras though.

Definitely a yea! Very interesting and intriguing and well worth the time and effort to get their early for a ticket!

No height restrictions that i know of; dh is 6'3" and was fine. In addition to no cameras - no purses OR backpacks allowed, either.

Try to visit the Everett plant and the Flight Museum...you will enjoy both.As a Boeing employee(retired) from the east coast I visited the Seattle area plants on many occasions for business.I eventually took my wife along on one of the trips and we took the public tour.Even though I had been there numerous times I enjoyed it as much ,if not more, then she.

I'm planning a trip to Seattle this weekend and happen to have the numbers right here.

For same day ticket availibility, call 425-342-8500

For reservations in advance, call 800-464-1476.

I got these numbers out of the 2002 Frommers Seattle/Portland book, so I hope they're right!

Have fun!

DebbieJ has the right numbers. 800-464-1476 for reservations. They answer the phone from 9 to noon and 1 to 4 Pacific time.

Tour times are at 9, 10, 11, 1, 2 and 3. If you don't reserve, tickets are $5. If you do reserve, the ticket price jumps to $10 each.

One other thing - when we first looked into this, we didn't realize that the tour is NOT at Boeing field. It's near Paine Field in Everett.
