Have heard mention of the Blue Book for some not so traveled sites to visit in Kauai. Can someone give me the exact name and authos. Can't seem to locate the book. Thanks.

The Blue Book problem seems to be virtually limited to Maui. Has any fuss been made about the Kauai and BI versions?

As a resident of Kaua`i, I can tell you that there has been lots of fuss about this danged book.

Not enough warnings about the dangers of ocean, rivers, trails.

Not enough "don't trespass on private property" cautions (if the sign says "kapu", that means "stay off").

Statewide, this book has been banned from the bookstores at all parks. The first, ever.

There are Kaui, Maui & Big Island issues and they will be releasing an Oahu issue in October. I found the Maui & Kaui books very helpful in choosing lodging and which tours I wanted to go on. They give the kind of opinions you would get from a friend or another traveller rather than the pc version you might get from some guide books. Since I am not the type to wander too far off the beaten path I didn't use some of the suggestions on how to "bypass" the trespassing signs etc. I am already afraid of the ocean so I didn't need any warnings on that either. It is too bad that they have included that type of information in the book because the rest of the book is great. I wouldn't ignore a no tresspassing sign or private sign no matter what a book said, but there are always those who figure the rules don't apply to them. I liked the aerial views of the hotels because "ocean front" can mean lots of different things! The Maui book gives you a website and password to view the hotel info because there are too many listings to fit in one book.

I must say that the "Blue Book" helped me to have a spectacular time on the Big Island and on Maui. I saw and experienced sights that would have been impossible to have known about otherwise. These books are truly like having a native show you around.

That being said, there is the burden of responsibility put on the reader to act properly. The surf around the Islands is not a Disney World controlled attraction. I saw a family with small children climbing down a cliff face on Maui in order to swim in tidal pools that "Maui Revealed" pointed them towards. The waves were crashing into the cliffs with so much power, I was worried for their lives, but they were seemingly unconcerned.
Who bears the responsibility for their safety, the authors, or the readers?

It's really a shame that this has been banned from state parks bookstores because they give so many good reviews of activities and such. The photos are very good and maps are easy to follow.
I am like Mary2Go, I would never disobey a no trespassing sign or a road closed sign. I have enough problem getting the DH just to go to a resort (other than the one where we are staying) to just gawk! I guess he just doesn't like to intrude on the privacy of others..we live about 1/4 off the road in the country and it is amazing the numbers of people who come all the way down to the house just to look. Grief, there's nothing to see but lots of grass that needs mowing and perhaps the hubby taking a leak in his own back yard!!
Anyway, it is a shame about portions of the book because it really is a great guide.

289 more days until we visit beautiful Kauai and I promise to obey and just love being in paradise.

We went to Kauai and Maui last year and the blue books were the best!! The other couple we were with brought what their friends in CA considered to be "The Best."....all it did was sit at the bottom of a beach bag the rest of the trip. They actually liked our book so much we left the Kauai book with them as we continued to Maui.

The blue book was AWESOME- we used it to figure out places to stay and eat- you'd think the locals would like this part at least if it's bringing money to their establishment?? I never would have found some of the places on my own and they really were fantastic.

We stayed on marked roads and I respect the ocean and nature enough not to test it.

And then we have the places about which they write negatively. Just recently someone here asked for dining suggestions and said that Maui Reviled didn't speak very highly of one restaurant that actually happens to be one of my favorites. I think people take these authors way too literally, rather than acknowledging that these are just the opinions of two people. They are not the final definitive authorities on the island. They have hurt as many loacl businesses as they have helped.
