Laura, I haven't stayed there myself but a coworker of mine stayed there last summer and he said it was fine. He booked it because it was affordable and was one of the few places available during a busy time and he was pleased with it. He didn't give me a lot of details on it, but he did say it was clean, comfortable, safe, etc, and it's definitely in a good location.

I've stayed here a few years ago and two things come to mind when I think of this hotel: bad location, and small rooms. First, the hotel is right on the edge of Union Square, bordering the Tenderloin. It is within walking distance of Macy's and the theater district, but it's also too far to really be in the tourist throng. You'll be about half a block from a seedy area that has many roaming homeless folks. During the day it's fine but I didn't feel safe at night. Second, the rooms are tiny, like many other smaller SF hotels. If you are staying 4 to a room, expect it to be a very tight squeeze. Decor-wise, very pleasing with lots of lush colors and draperies.
Truthfully, I'd suggest staying elsewhere. Depending on what your budget is, there are plenty of other places in the area. The King George Hotel is also small and interesting, and in a much better location. A bit older and not as stylishly furnished, but quite charming. Hotel Triton at the edge of Chinatown and Union Square I've heard good things about as well.
