"Ash continued to fall over the weekend but smoke was barely noticeable, nothing like the previous week."
We've had a lot of smoke in SJ last week and over the weekend - it must be blowing inland and then making its way up the valleys. At times the smoke up here was so bad that you couldn't see the hills on either side of the Santa Clara Valley. There is less today, but the air is still bad.

Ugh, sorry you're getting all that smoke, november_moon. It seems my assumption about the fire being far enough south was wrong and it was merely blowing in a different direction.
I understand the air quality in SLO is pretty bad too from the Chimney fire and another fire (Rey fire) has been burning in Santa Barbara county since Thursday

The smoke has been interesting. Early on, when the fire was fairly new, we could see a "river" of smoke traveling straight up Hwy 101 to San Jose. That was very strange. Since then, its spread out, dissipated, come back, and now it seems to be dissipating again. We've had a few smaller fires up with way which have contributed as well, but a lot of it is from the Sobrantes fire. I think its just a matter of how the air currents move.

It's been two weeks since we've had any heavy smoke in Carmel. I think you should be good. Some of the state parks have partially reopened. Currently open -
Point Lobos
Garrapata State Park west of Hwy 1 only
Point Sur Lighthouse resuming tours this weekend
Buzzard's Roost trail at Pfeiffer Big Sur which is located west of Hwy 1
Pfeiffer Beach
Julia Pfeiffer Burns west of Hwy 1 only (Partington Cove, McWay Falls)
So far nothing east of Hwy 1 has reopened but the east side of Pfeiffer Big Sur has a targeted reopening date of September 5th.

They had to completely close Julia Pfeiffer Burns again over Labor Day weekend due to increased fire activity. There's a touch of smoke in the air here in Carmel today for the first time in weeks. I can't believe tomorrow will be the start of week 8 of this fire.

Heavy smoke again in Carmel today for the first time in 5 weeks. I believe this is from the current burnout operation on the east side of the fire. Evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted on the west (Big Sur) side of the fire.

McWay Falls and Partington Cove at Julia Pfeiffer Burns have reopened. The wind direction has changed and the air quality in Carmel has been good since mid-morning yesterday. The wind is supposed to come from the north for the rest of this week.

What a horrible fire this has been. It's hard to imagine that 400+ structures are still under threat.
Patty, thanks for the regular updates. Sadly, it's too easy for us in the distance to forget that the fire is ongoing.

I didnt know this fire was still burning. How awful! Native so Californian here so growing up with the up close and personal experiences of Santa Ana wind driven fires keeps me hypersensitive to smoke.
Its hard to think about all the natural destruction and threat to homes.
We just had 3 days of drenching rain in Utah, the first since June. It sure felt good. Hopefully some will come CA way soon!
