Big Island: looking for vegetarian restaurants

We are staying at the Hapuna Beach Prince June 6-13 and looking for recommendations for vegetarian (vegan is even better) restaurants for lunch and dinner... anything from takeout to fine dining. Thanks!

I really like Kona Brewing for a beer and a great pizza. Lots of vegetarian options, and certainly able to order without cheese if you would like.

Here's a great thread on Chowhound about veggie dining:

I'm primarily vegetarian, and my parents are opposite. I didn't have a problem at any restuarant we went to -- found that there was always at least one veg option on the menu (even on Thanksgiving when I was last there!).

Merrimans Cafe has lots of veggie dishes. When we go there, we order lots of plates and share. We have a veggie in our group, so I can say that those plates are really good.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm most familiar with the North Kohala area. You will do well on the Big Island as the produce is fabulously flavorful.

Merriman's also has a wonderful restaurant in Waimea, and Daniel Thiebaut has my favorite "Tofu Napoleon." http://www.danielthiebaut.com/

In Hawi, The Bamboo Restaurant has several great tofu dishes, as well as Old Hawaii atmosphere and music or hula on Friday & Saturday nights.

Sushi Rock, also in Hawi, is a terrific tiny restaurant with young, innovative owner & chef. http://www.gokohala.com/business/dining/Sushi_Rock.html
This link also explores Kohala.

Another great restaurant with delicious Greek/Hawaiian food is Pico's Bistro, with a darling tiny museum and quality art gallery attached. http://www.pualiliacreations.com/kenji.html

In Kawaihae, which is where Waterworld was filmed, (it is pretty close to the Hapuna) is Cafe Pesto, which also has good food.

And, since you will be on the Big Island for King Kamehameha Day (June 11) you may want to attend the wonderful celebration in Hawi/Kapa'au, which involves processions of descendants of Hawaiian royalty, giant leis draping the statue of King Kamehameha, and a wonderful parade, followed by a community fair. It's magical! (Link is to a video of the parade.)

There is a shopping area next to the Marriott and Hilton hotels in the general area you will be staying called King's Shops; across the street there is a new shopping complex which should have eateries also.

Drive into the Kona area and there will be more choices: http://www.konaweb.com/konaweb/island.shtml

Also, you must try the Sunday Brunch or Prime Rib & Seafood Buffet at King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Whenever we go back, it is a "Must Do" for our family. It maybe a little pricey, but it will be memorable, worth the money, not like the mainland hotel buffets, and the view is beautiful. We had a family reunion and enjoyed their Luau too which was wonderful.

Enjoy your stay on the Big Island.

I'm not sure that a vegetarian would get their money's worth at a Prime Rib and Seafood buffet.
