Big Island, Hawaii - Camping
Other than the Volcano Park what other camping sites are there on the Big Island? Looking for somewhere relatively safe as we are two women traveling alone. Any to avoid? I am looking something that is easy to get to since we do not want to do backcountry camping. Preferably sites with restrooms & water.

Here's the link to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, State Parks:

Like David said, Hapuna is good. We also like the cabins at Kalopa State Park. You'll be safe.

The County of Hawai`i also has some campgrounds, although the State Parks tend to be better maintained. Here's the link to the County Parks:

I didn't realize there was a campground at Laupahoehoe. It's an interesting place for a visit, but you might prefer Mahukona for an overnighter. I haven't camped there either, so I can't advise you as to safety. In general, I prefer cabins and a-frames to places where you just put up a tent. So my choices tend to be Namakani Paio in Volcano National Park, Hapuna, and Kalopa.
