I can only speak for the Hilo side.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Visitors Center, Jaggar Museum, Thurston Lava Tube, several overlooks and short hikes, Chain of Craters Road.

In Hilo: Liliuokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots

Just north of Hilo: 4 mile scenic drive, Akaka Falls State Park, take the short loop trail that includes Kahuna Falls.

I'd add a trip to Hawi and drive on to Polulu lookout then hike down to the beach.

Relax!!

Spokaneman, your idea sounds good. Do you have any recommendations as to where to rent a kayak? I'm taking my wife and 2 kids (10/12) to Hawaii in July. Thanks

There are a bunch of places along the road to get a rental, don't worry about finding one. If you go, go very early as the Dolphins come into the bay to feed, then tend to depart mid-morning. Take some food and drinks, they give you sea bags to carry stuff and be sure to take reef runners so you can paddle to Cooks monument and get out of the kayak. Lots of good snokeling over there.

You might want to consider renting a car with a roof rack so you can tie the kayaks to the top of the car without damaging the car.

Don't get sucked into a guided tour, the kayak rental places can tell you what to do and where to go, paddling a sea kayak is no big chore.

We just paddled to the middle of the bay and waited, the Dolphins found us. There were several kayakers that tried to paddle to where they saw fins, but you cannot catch them. Dolphins are curious and social and they will eventually find you. The 'spinners" were amazing and close enough to photograph with a disposable underwater camera.

It beats the heck out of the swim with the dolphins shows at the hotels.
