Big Bear Resort, California - Info please!
I am planning a trip to see a friend in LA over Christmas. We want to rent a condo in Big Bear and ski for 5 days (minimum stay required during Christmas). I found a good priced condo at Snow Summit. We have only skied in Colorado - question for you skiers - is Snow Summit and Bear Mountain a good choice? Is the snow good during this time? How does it compare to Colorado? The adults ski and the teens all snowboard. Any information on the area is welcome. Or if you have other recommendations... Thanks!

Summit and Bear are probably the best local mountains. However...
It is California! Around Christmas, I'd bet that there won't be much snow, and what's on the ground will be manmade stuff, which is not as good to ski on as real snow (obviously). If we do have real snow, it tends to be heavier and wet. It's not a rarity around Christmas time for us LA folks to be sitting outside drinking Cranberry Margaritas...it can be warm!
Summit and Bear Mountain would also be smaller than the the big resorts of Colorado, Utah, or Northern Calif. There are some fun runs though, and who knows...you can get lucky. I remember a few years ago...seems like we had the best skiing in the country!

No, I think those are the best ones...they are at the highest elevations (hence, best chance for snow).
We Angeleans usually drive up to Mammoth (4-5 hours away) for serious skiing. Further away is Tahoe. I actually fly to Utah every year. In fact, I haven't skied locally here for a couple of years...compared to the big resorts of Utah, Summit and Bear seem crowded.
Doesn't mean that you can't have fun though. We'll pray for snow. ;-)

Well, we do want good ski conditions. We could consider 4-5 hours to drive to the resort you have suggested if the conditions for snow there are better. I will check out this resort as well. Thanks.

Well, do book in advance for Mammoth for the holiday. Like most ski resorts, it gets pretty full. It will be crowded on the runs, but gets a lot better as you get away from the base.
Mammoth definitely stands a better chance at snow around that time. But Christmastime can be a crapshoot for all ski resorts, in my opinion. At least if Mammoth has snow, most likely it will be real stuff!
You would probably enjoy Mammoth...it's a huge, fun mountain. Don't forget to bring chains for your car on the drive up...because when you don't have them is undoubtedly when you'd need them.
