Big Bear Questions

We are going to Palm Springs over Christmas and wanted to stop in Big Bear first so the kids can ski. Never been there and need to know upscale places to stay, best airport if we will be driving to Palm Sprints, how are the ski schools, and any other info for a family first time visit. Thanks

We liked the Black Forest Lodge. Stay in the main house.

I'm not sure what your definition of "upscale" is, but I really don't really think that any of the Big Bear lodgings could be called "upscale". Most are motel-type properties, none warranting more than 3 diamonds from AAA (I've stayed at several of the alleged 3d's and I wouldn't give them more than a 2d)

The Northwoods Resort is the newest property (www.northwoodsresort.com). The Lagonita Lodge is a timeshare resort with condominium units. You'd better try getting reservations ASAP for Xmas week!

As for the skiing, Snow Summit is definitely the best for families and ski schools. Bear Mountain has been given over to the snowboarders. I'm not sure how old your kids are, but SS has many lesson options. I find that they learn a lot quicker in the private lessons. It's about $85/hour for the 1st kid and $20 for each additional kid.

Ontario, CA is probably the closest large airport.

Thanks for the information. Any other lodging ideas? Northwood is full!

Fireside Lodge or Forest Shores Inn are okay. You could also try AlpineGetaway.com. They rent cabins and condos. Again, basic rustic accomodations. You usually need to bring your own linens, etc., but you might check if they have some properties that they rent with linens, so you don't have to pack them. I'm sure they have a minimum # of night rentals for the holiday periods.

Good luck!

I must agree with the previous posts about the lack of upscale places to stay in Big Bear. Most are motel types and various cabin rentals. I love staying at the 4-5 star places but Big Bear is one place where I think rustic is the best way to go. Nothing like a warm fire and a hot toddy in your cabin after a day at the slopes! Plus being able to stretch out is a bonus. But to each is own.

The family and I stayed at the Pine Knot Guest Ranch several times. They have rustic cabins of various sizes. All are very clean, the propertior is always around and it is located perhaps a quarter mile from the village. There is also a great FREE sledding area nearby for the kids.

See:www.pineknotguestranch.com or use a search engine to find it. You will see photos and prices of the various cabin rentals. Again, this is far from upscale but I think it has a lot to offer. But do reserve early as it will be VERY busy.

Best airport to fly in is Ontario. From there, just jump on the 10 Fwy and you should be in Palm Springs within 90 minutes easy.
