Hey Al, I did what you suggested and found the $247.00 price. The trouble is that's for an economy car. We have to at least have a mid-size to hold our luggage. Also, that price is before they tack on the fee for this and the fee for that so, you would need to at least add a hundred to that amount. I did learn something from doing this , the prices are slightly cheaper in March than in July so, maybe they will eventually go down.
To Myname, we are traveling up to Mystic Ct. first , then Maine for a few days, the New Hampshire and back to NYC for a week. Sounds like a neat trip ,huh? I just am trying to keep the costs down as much as possible. What is a Metronorth? Is that some bus or something? Head North to where? Thanks

Look into taking MetroNorth (train service from Grand Central) or a bus to New Haven, CT. Check rates there... should be cheaper then you don't have to worry about driving in or out of the city.

Aslo, if you are not going until July, you can reserve a car now and cancel it later if rates go down.

Still, seems like a lot of effort to save $50 or so.

Trisha - MetroNorth is commuter train service into NY from areas as far north as Poughkeepsie NY, Waterbury CT, and as far East as New Haven, CT. Fares much lower than Amtrak (no reclining seats nor snack bars) and you may see the map and find further links at

If you head to Newark, you are going out of your way. There is an Enterprise fairly close to the New Rochelle stop. This location is still in the NY metro area and may have rates higher than you are considering. I am not that familiar with MetroNorth, Westchester and Ct. I am sure others know more.

HI! I am also looking for the best way to get from Laguardia to Newark. We'll be staying at the Hilton(5 minutes from the Newark airport). We are arriving at 10:30pm. I was thinking of using a limo service -anyone have a recommendation? I don't know how comfortable I would be taking public transport that late at night. Has anyone taken a taxi on this route?
Thanks!! -S

Also keep in mind you can not legally take amtrak locally (like between NYC and stamford CT)as the commuter lines are offered by Metro North.

chfenton- while there's many stations where you cannot do that, you CAN take Amtrak between those two stations - I did it just last November. Fare was almost 4x the MNR fare tho.

Gingerbelle, You are arriving at LaGuardia at 10:30pm and staying at the Hilton in Newark. Why???? The Hilton in Newark is not a good place to stay unless you are doing business in Newark and must stay there. A limo from LAG to Newark will wipe out any price advantage of the hotel. Newark is not fun at night. My husband works in the Law Center attached to the Hilton Hotel. Believe me, we know....do not stay at that hotel if at all possible.

Elainee,
The wedding we are attending is in Newark and thats the Hotel that everyone is staying at. I agree, it doesn't look very nice. Anyhow, the night flight into Newark was several hundred dollars more so we decided on La Guardia. Do you know of any reputable limo service we could use?
Thanks-S

Gingerbelle, Now it makes sense to stay in Newark. Be careful, especially at night. We use Crown Limo service. Dan Shah is our driver. Call 1-866-460-1010 or 201-306-2434. Tell him you are a friend of the Epsteins. His price will be $86 plus toll(4.50?) and tip. Not cheap, but he is very reliable and very nice. I would not recommend using a cab from LGA at that time. The driver will not be happy to go to Newark. He cannot pick up a fare to get back so he may be allowed to charge extra. Have a good wedding.

Gingerbelle, Glad you got my message. What can I recommend about Newark. Well, the train into NYUC only takes a few minutes. Zoros bakery in the train station has really good stuff. Thats about it. Have fun.
