Best way to get from LGA to Newark airport?
 

I'm flying in LGA but, am renting a car at the Newark airport. The cars at LGA are three times as expensive and I got a cheap flight on Delta from Dallas to LGA at $180.00 round trip. The flights to Newark are about 100.00 more so, I thought I would somehow find a way to get to Newark to rent my car. I would imagine a taxi would be very expensive. Has anyone done this that could give me some advice? Appreciate it!

Never done it and I would imagine it is not the easiest trip. <BR><BR>Cheapest version: M60 bus to Broadway and 116th in Manhattan. Transfer to the subway, take the 1 or 9 down to 34th street Penn station. Transfer to Amtrak that links you right up to Newart airport. This would take a long time and would not be easy. <BR><BR>Slightly more expensive: New York Airport express bus $10 goes to Penn station. catch amtrak from there. <BR><BR>Have you considered picking up a car in a non-airport location? I have not compared the prices, but Long Island might have better rates than LaGuardia.

ETS Air Shuttle is the way to go--$25. Check it out on the above website posted by ezmark.

You could also consider renting from Hertz or Enterprise in Hoboken, NJ (which offer cheaper rates than NYC).<BR><BR>You'd then take the subway (cheapest but less convenient) or the shuttle bus to Port Authority. From there take the NJ Transit #126 bus (10 minute ride) to either car rental location... the bus stops w/n 50 feet of each.

I wonder if Airtrain Newark runs back and forth from LGA to EWR? We took it from EWR to Penn Station and it was only $11.50 for that distance.

you are going to absolutely regret doing what you intend to do. the cars cant be 3x more expensive. what an awful travel day you haev in store for you.

I have to agree with the above poster. It's going to be a real pain in the butt. I would only consider it if NJ (or west) is your final destination.

Cough up the extra $100 and fly into Newark. You'll thank yourself in the morning.

I can't fly to Newark because I already bought my ticket. I think I'm going to keep trying to find a cheaper car in LGA. I have been looking at specials but, I have noticed that with every special listed on the the various rental car companies, they always say except New York Metro area. Now, why would the New York Metro area not be included in the rental car co. specials. Hopefully, a reasonable rate will come about. Thankyou everyone for your suggestions.

Where do you plan to go with your rental car?<BR><BR>I notice that in the greater NY area, EWR usually does have the cheapest cars, by a long shot. However if you're headed north into NY, or east to CT, you might wish to try MetroNorth commuter rail.<BR><BR>I have done the connection you're doing. I used the NY Airport Service http://www.nyairportservice.com/ bus from LGA to Grand Central. ($16 r/t if you book in advance online!) I think it was about 35 min. From there I used their transfer shuttle to get to Penn Station ... however that part took almost as long as LGA to GCT, so I would suggest a taxi to Penn, or even bus/subway. I used the Olympia bus http://www.olympiabus.com/ ($19 r/t)from next door of Penn Station to EWR - I think it was about 50 min. Departures each 5-15 minutes. Other pickup/drop off points too, check their websites.<BR><BR>Be aware that &quot;Airlink&quot; is NOT a separate train - just a name given to trains (both Amtrak and NJT) that get you between Penn Station &amp; EWR.

Have you tried Enterprise or a smaller, local rental company?

Thanks, for your replies. I did try Enterprise and got $398.00 at LGA for nine days. I'm not sure if there are hidden costs behind that though. For instance, do you have to buy the insurance even though you have insurance that covers a rental. I can't tell from their website if it's optional or not. Also, I do plan to drive to Maine, New hampshire and then back to NYC . It does say that if you go out of NY, NJ, and CT , you would only be allowed 150.00 FREE miles a day.<BR>The car I have reserved in Newark is $273.00 for the nine days. So, if there are any hidden costs that I don't know about and I keep the miles under the limit then, Enterprise won't be too bad. I have never used Priceline for rental cars but, I guess I could try it. I would certainly wait a little closer until I leave. Thanks

Trisha - it appears you've saved $100 on your flight, and $125 on the car, so you're not doing too badly. You might wish to check prices at other Enterprise locations tho. The prices at airport locations are usually much higher due to various airport fees and special &quot;soak the traveler&quot; taxes. For example, suppose you took MetroRail to Stamford ($8.50) or further towards Boston ... Enterprise will &quot;pick you up&quot;, you wouldn't be subjected to &quot;airport fees&quot;, and you'd not be driving as far.<BR><BR>Or you could take a PeterPan/Greyhound bus (or Amtrak) to Hartford CT, where auto rentals are often much less expensive. Boston rentals also tend to be pricey, but Providence RI is cheap.

Am I missing something here? I just plugged a LaGuardia pickup and some imaginary dates (March 22-30) into Orbitz and came up with car prices from $247 upwards.<BR><BR>Why don't you give it a try???

just a question, are you spending anytime in NYC or are you driving out of state immediately?<BR><BR>if you are heading north, you will save time if you head North on metronorth and then pick up your car.
