Best way from Boston to Nantucket?

Will be traveling from New York to downtown Boston via Amtrak (will not have a car). Would like to travel from Boston to Nantucket for a few nights stay in mid September. Does anyone know which bus company offers the best round trip service to the ferry to Nantucket from Boston? Thanks for your help...

I'm attaching a link from the Steamship Authority website to the Peter Pan/Bonanza bus lines. You will be coming into South Station in Boston on Amtrak. I'm not sure if you can pick up the Plymouth & Brockton bus to Hyannis at South Station. Does anyone know that for sure? The Steamship Authority (one of the ferry lines to Nantucket) recommends Peter Pan/Bonanza. There's also a bus station in Hyannis a couple of blocks from the Steamship ferry, but I'm drawing a blank on which one it is. Can anyone help refresh my memory on that? Anyway, here's the link http://www.islandferry.com/ssa/BusSe...un=MV&From=BOS If you call the Steamship Authority, they may be able to give you more specific information.

Sorry, the link I posted is from Woods Hole, and you want to be in Hyannis to pick up the Nantucket ferries. If you can pick up the Plymouth & Brockton bus line at South Station, I think that's your best bet. I am pretty sure that it's the bus station near the ferry terminal in Hyannis. I would like to add that Nantucket will be worth the effort it will take to get there! Let us know if you would like any specific information about the island. There are many people here who can help you out. Personally, I'm better at restaurant recommondations than directions!

Thanks so much Marie for the info. That makes getting to Nantucket "easier".
Any recommendations on restaurants and places to stay? Is it better to stay near where all the action is since we won't have a car? Not sure of the layout of Nantucket. Thanks for your help...

Gail: I'm happy to help out...Nantucket is one of my favorite places and I'm fortunate to be able to visit often as I live in the Boston area. September is also a great time to visit - the weather is usually great and the summer crowds have subsided. For your first visit, I would recommend that you stay in Nantucket Town, which is where most of the shopping and restaurants are located. Check out www.nantucket.net for an extensive list of the many inns, B&Bs, restaurants and things to do. I don't know your price range, but if you want to splurge, the White Elephant is an exceptional place to stay right on the water. My husband and I also like Seven Sea Street and the Brant Point Inn for more moderate accommodations. Here's a link to a recent post that discusses some restaurant options http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...e=MarieF&fid=1. I would also suggest that you take one of the bus tours that take you outside of Town and show you the beauty of the island. Gayle's Tours is one that is often recommended. If you like to bike, the bike paths are another way to see the island. Please post again if you have any specific questions. There are many people on this board who are knowledgeable about the island.

GailLK,
Will you be spending time in Boston also? I'm wondering if you have considered flying to Nantucket from either New York (NYC?) or Boston rather than the bus and ferry. It can sometimes be more economical depending on how many people and could save you a lot of travel time.

Cape Air flies to Nantucket from Boston, but in season it is very costly, perhaps it is better in September, but the bus and ferry are far cheaper than flying usually.

Here is a link to my report on where we ate this summer on Nantucket:

Gail: I just tried to open the link about restaurants that I left in an earlier message. I inadvertantly posted the link to all of my posts here on Fodors. Let's try this again...http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=35011220.

I think to fly Cape Air from Boston to Nantucket in Sept. is around $250. The bus and ferry around $90. IMO it is definitely worth looking into if only for the time savings and convenience.

Thanks so much for ALL the info! Will definitely check into "flying" to Nantucket as another option. The frequency of flights seems to be less after summer is over from NYC/NWK NJ airports. The train/bus/ferry option allows more flexibility in case we need to cancel due to bad weather, etc. Thanks again....

Are you going direct from NYC to Nantucket? I'm sorry, I didn't know you were willing to fly form NYC/Newark direct to Nantucket - I thought from your original post you were already coming to Boston adn wanted to add a night or two in Nantucket - if you can afford it, flying is absolutely quicker - if $ is a consideration, then the bus direct to the ferry is less.
