In the past I have used an American Express card to accumulate FF miles on Delta. I haven't been altogether pleased and am thinking about getting a card that provides miles that can be used on any airline. I notice that Chase Mastercard and AmEx Blue card both offer this type of account. Any advice? Have you found these type of points easy to redeem on any airline?

Switch over to a "regular" Amex card and join its Membership Rewards program, which includes several major airlines.

I have an Alaska Airlines Visa Platinum card which earns me miles for of course Alaska Airlines (as well comes with a $50 companion ticket each year). But, the nice thing about their program is that they are partnered up with all the other major airlines so you can use your Alaska miles to redeem free tickets on American, Delta, Continental, Hawaiian, etc. the list is very long. Also, when flying these other airlines such as American, you also can earn frequent flyer miles for your Alaska Airlines account. Actually, I just booked two free tickets for my next trip last night on Delta.

Agreed that with a regular AmEx card you can use your points on numerous airlines - as well as many hotels, resorts and other goods/service. I've always found their Rewards program the most felixible - as well as the advantage of having no limit on your credit.

I also agree with Amex, try to upgrade to a platinum card...the membership rewards are the best, their concierge service is great..

With many of the airlines merging and going bankrupt, you need a card that you can use your points on any airline. However AmEx does not have American Airlines - so if AA is convenient for you I think aother card is linked with them. Delta has really cut back on their flights, (no longer a direct flight from NY to Vegas ...but the good thing is that they are linked with Jet Blue.

I do like AmEx, because it is more than a charge card, they offer many services...including lower than rack rate for their hotels and fantastic travel services. you actually get your own personal travel agent and concierge. They keep a profile on you with all your preferences. This is all included in your yearly membership fee.

One of the best things about the Platinum is the free companion ticket on overseas travel. The paying ticket can't be a deeply discounted one however.

I don't have one right now but have been considering one again. It is primarily of use to frequent travellers. LMF

AE Plat members can use - and bring a guest - CO, DL and NW's airport lounge when flying with that airline. If you're paying for such a membership already (~$250+ a year), then the AE Plat is quite a deal at $395.
