best time to visit NYC

My husband and I just returned from our fist trip to New York and had a wonderful time. I would like to go back and take my daughter who loves the theater. We are very flexible as to when to go. Is there any certain time of the year when room rates would be more reasonable? We would just be going for a long weekend. Thank you.

Linda:
Room rates seem to be lower right after the Christmas Holidays and before Easter. Again, after Labor Day but before Thanksgiving.
A long weekend in late January sounds like it might be what you are looking for.

If your looking for theather tickets, they usually have lower prices from Jan to March. The room rates are at there lowest now too. There is a deal with the marriot Marquis and thoroughly modern mille Its from Jan 7 to march 16 except Sat. call 212 3074100 and mention Marriott. It must be done by Dec 31. I get the flyers in the mail frequently. So try this deal.

Jeanette, can you comment further on the Marriot Marquis and Thoroughly Modern Mille deal? Sounds interesting! Also, do theater rates really drop in the "off months"? What type of lower rates would be offered? I know you can't be specific, but I guess I mean do the "biggies" lower ticket prices too? Thanks for you help - we too are thinking of a trip before Easter.

Theater ticket prices don't "drop" in the strictest sense of the word but there are likely to be some promotions, coupons or special discounts available on some shows. Shows that are a really hot ticket (e.g. the Producers or Hairspray) are unlikely to have discounts available at any time even during the wonter until they have been supplanted by some other big shows. You may find tickets easier to get for the really popular shows and you'll also find a better selection available at TKTS during the Jan - March period, especially on weeknights. Also recommended is to get on the free mailing lists for playbill.com and theatremania.com - they often have promo codes that get you 10-30% off on some shows. If you're going to wait until you arrive to pick some shows, you may also find coupons or specials through the Times Square Visitor Center or the hotel concierge.
