Best Places to Live In Broward County

Hi:
I currently live in NYC and was giving serious thought to moving down to South Fla. I was especially interested in the Broward County area.
What areas would you reccommend that would be nice to live with lots of interesting things to do and where alot of younger people live (and not only seniors)?

I don't know what your looking for, but I hope you know what you are doing.

I moved from New York to Miami 6 years ago and aside from a leser cost of living, I would give my right arm to go back to NYC.

As for Broward it is much much duller than Dade county, but again it all depends what your looking for. But for what it is worth, I have NEVER known a northerner that didn't wish they were back home.

Sorry Dave but I will have to disagree with you on this one. I know Northerns who are very happy they left the Northeast and are now living in Florida. Quite a few.

Count me as someone who came from the North 5 years ago and has no plans to come back....

Dave reveals how little he knows when he says that Broward is "much much duller" than Miami/Dade. Admittedly Ft Laud. doesn't have the same world-class club reputation as say South Beach but it is hardly "dull". And at least you can walk into a bar in Broward and order a drink without needing a translator.

Like I said it all amounts to what sorts of things you like. I am a bit of an artsy, and the arts community is seorely lacking here.

But there are a lot of other distractions, so again it depends what you like.

As for your comments about english, you must not have come here in 15 years, other than going to a bar in little Havana. Actually many of the bartenders on Sobe are from NYC.

Personally I want the best of both worlds...live in New York summer and fall and the winter in Suth Beach, then I will be happy gt;

Stay home. Stay away. Don`t move to Florida, you wouldn`t like the cockroaches and would insist on spraying everything in sight with pesticides to eliminate it`s tropical fauna. Then you would try to create a northern style grassy yard with more herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides. You would not like it here, people are dying all the time from cancer, and now we have mosquito borne killer deseases(double up on the aerial pesticide spraying at night). Our fish are filled with mercury. And we have the worst kind of pollution, to many New Yorkers.

Dave, you are full of it. The Arts are thriving in both Dade and Broward counties. I'd be willing to bet you just don't go, but like to complain that it isn't as good as "up north". You can see three to four plays a week, at least two operas and two ballets a month, dozens of philharmonic concerts, and literally thousands of gallery showings. If you are doing all those things and still feel that it is "lacking" then good for you. My guess is you haven't been to a play or opera in months.

Your right! I refuse to WASTE any further money on either the pathetic Dade County Auditorium, or the Broward Center for Performing Arts, or the Jackie Gleason, etc etc.

The only decent center is in Palm Beach.

You will convince me perhaps to change my mind once the new Arts Center is completed (if ever)

I am not suggesting that the talent isn't there, JUST the facilities for these people to adequately perform in.

As for the Galleries, there is a smittering of them here and there, but compared to other major cities it is way out of line, thanks to the lack of political and public support, who would rather build countless baseball, football, and basketball auditoriums than decent performing arts centers!

Wow...seems like some of the posters think I would be making a big mistake to leave NYC and go to South Florida...I realize it isn't NYC, but I always had the impression there was lots of things to do there. I know there aren't alot of museums, but aren't there many bars, live music places, music concerts (I like rock and pop type stuff), art gallaries, live theatre, etc. How about clubs and organizations for singles?
Also, any reccommendations on communities to live where there is alot of stuff to do close by and also a younger singles crowd? I heard Ft Lauderdale area and Hollywood are supposed to be pretty good?

OK, now I get it, Dave. You are looking to see second or third rate bus and truck shows appearing at the venues you mentioned. What I'm talking about are the much better smaller professional theatres. You didn't mention the Gusman either, a great facility. Coconut Grove Playhouse does some great stuff. Parker Playhouse in Ft. Lauderdale, not to mention some great small professional companies. You're really missing the boat by just looking for the national tours in the big barn auditoriums.

And Mike, ignore people like Dave who truly believe that New York is the end all to the world. He shows his true colors when he says, "once you've had the best, it's tough to see less!"
His mind is made up that nothing will compare to New York.

As long as you are willing to accept the fact that Broward isn't New York, then you will be fine. There is plenty of high quality everything there -- maybe just not as much of it as in NYC.
