Hi Orcas,
I do live in the Southeast, but just since January. I did grow up in the South, but from there to Hawaii, California, and then I met the Yankee and lived in NYC for many years.
We are always on the lookout for an ever so cool place to live and we hear Portland is ever so cooool~
We have looked already, might just look some more But I did get my neighborhoods list from a lovely lady who lives there..

Scarlett,
Portland is, indeed, ever so cooool! We moved to Portland from Atlanta several years ago. Alas, now we've left for the Seattle area. It's actually very beautiful also, but isn't as tranquil as Portland.
I prefer the lifestyle and weather here to the southeast. It is rarely too hot and in summer the skies are often crystal clear. We spend our summers and even nice days all year round out-of-doors, whereas in Atlanta we stayed in the air conditioning for much of the year. And the scenery in the northwest is incomparable!
You'll have to keep us posted if you join us in the Pacific NW!

WineryCat--This area how changed so much even in the last few years...so yes, definitely come back for a visit and see! We have family that has lived here forever, so although the military had us living all over the country we kept coming back to visit.
Orcas--I was born and raised in the PNW...then moved from PDX to the SE. What a culture shock! lol! Many years later we finally got stationed back on the west coast (Seattle area...dh's home) and then recently moved back to the PDX area. I was miserable in the south...too hot and humid for my liking, lol! We are avid hikers/backpackers and so are thoroughly enjoying being back

Thank you so much for the info. If I give you more info that would help. We are looking for a place that we could temporarily rent out until we can move maybe a year. So it needs to be an area where people want to live. I wouldn't mind a view and our price range is a little unsure right now. Probably in the <$500,000. Does that help.

Ladd's Addition is in SE, not SW. It is a very cool area, however, bordered by Hawthorne, Division, SE 20th and SE 12th. Unlike most of the rest of Portland's Neighborhoods, Ladd's Addition is laid out in triangles; there are three triangular rose gardens inside and a big circle garden right in the center. Forget about trying to drive through it to take a short cut - my friend calls it the Vortex because it's easy to get lost in there! Much more fun to walk through on a warm day or evening.
By the way, if you want a cheap place to eat near Ladd's Addition that is also very nice and non-smoking, check out Vincente's on Hawthorne at SE 20th. It's not exactly a pizza joint (too nice) and not exactly a bar, but a little of both (they have pizza and beer). But it has a nice atmosphere and a nice vibe plus friendly service.

PamSF, Ladd's Addition is a small neighborhood whereas, to locals, SW is a huge area of town, not a specific neighborhood. Do you remember where in SW you were visiting? Do you mean "Downtown" (technically "SW", south of Burnside, west of the river)?
