We have so many good Japanese restaurants in the city and Nobu is good but imho, overpriced.
There are several good ones all over the city. It would help if we knew what part of the city you are going to be in.
Some favs of ours are Mishima on Lex and 31st (small but amazing food)
Iron Sushi Chef, 3rd Ave and 30th St.
East 3rd Ave and 27th.
Ikura 3rd and 34th (all you can eat).
Hope this helps and I am sure you will get lots more suggestions!!

Nobu and Nobu Nextdoor are great, but expensive.
For good Japanese, (no sushi), I like Sapporo at 152 W 49th btw 6th & 7th. It's great for noodles and the best deal for an inexpensive meal in the Times Square area. I always go there for lunch if I'm working in the area. Many Japanese can be found eating there - always a plus in my book.
If you head downtown, the East Village is becoming a popular Japanese neighbohood, particularly around 9th Street btw 2nd & 3rd Ave. We often eat at the restaurants on the block and like them all. You have a Soba restaurant, a steakhouse and a sushi place. Excellent all!
Mie at 196 Second Ave btw 12th & 13th is excellent.
Our favorite sushi restaurant is Taste of Tokyo on the south side of 13th street east of Sixth Ave. Been going there for years - they have the best Spicy Tuna on the planet.

We are open to any area of New York - compliments of NYC's subway system. We currently have hotel reservations in Times Square, but willing to go where good food is at. Thanks for the suggestions.. any thoughts on Avenue A Sushi?

Nobu is an amazing restaurant. My husband and I go a few times a year and when we have out-of-town visitors. I TOTALLY agree with the person who said it is overpriced. It is not overpriced compared with other top restaurants. Items on teh menu are all about $12 to $20 and you can share a bunch and your bill will still be reasonable. Enjoy!

Oh, Avenue A sushi is definitely a great sushi...but it's night and day compared to Nobu. If you're just looking for sushi, then don't go to Nobu, go to Ave. A or elsewhere. But for creative Japanese, Nobu is the place. Also, Yama Sushi is great sushi too...near Union Square.

I put this question to a Japanese friend from Tokyo. She said Sushisay in 51st between madison and Park. According to Zagats everything is straight from Tokyo.
I think friend also mentioned Sushi Yasuda and that is another top pick from Zagats (43 between 2-3avenue.)
I live very close to Sushi of Gari. Zagats gives them high marks. I don't know what they are talking about. I think they are very standard. They are always packed for the location though, so I must be wrong.

I'm a big fan of Nobu but I would barely even consider it Japanese. It's intent is to be Peruvian-Japanese fusion, and I'm not really convinced that it accomplishes that. If you go, get the omakase, on your first visit they'll serve rock shrimp tempura and miso cod, 2 of the best dishes. What I'm trying to say is, if I had a craving for Japanese food, Nobu wouldn't be a consideration.
