hands down the best. the salsa is amazing. take a cab and go.
"Expect great football-size burritos, huevos rancheros, chicken fajitas, bottomless chips and some of the city's best homemade salsa. Try the excellent mole sauces, too."

Rick Bayless has the best authentic mexican restaurant in Chicago. There are two, right next to each other, Frontera Grill and Topolobambo, 445 N. Clark St. This is a healthy walk from The Mag Mile, but you can always cab it for about 7 bucks. The wait may be significant, so brunch is also suggested. Check out www.metromix.chicagotribune.com for more information.
There is also a fantastic, low-key, place in Pilsen/Little Village called Restaurante Nuevo Leon, 1515 W. 18th St. You will definately need a cab both ways.

I was hoping someone else would mention this. Although I don't live in Chicago, I have visited there and Nuevo Leon is my favorite. This is a true, authentic Mexican restaurant, not one aimed at tourists. It is located in a Mexican neighborhood.

In response to the question about Adobo Grill...it is pretty good. If you are in the neighborhood, it's not a bad choice. But in my opinion, it's not worth going out of your way for. I think it's overpriced...a typical "yuppie Mexican" place - certainly not authentic, but not bad either...
