I feel so bad for not looking at the posts for a while.. Thanks to all of you for your feedback. We are still looking for that "perfect" place to have a second home and eventually call home..

I have heard so many good things about Hot Springs but my husband made this stipulation... no mud bottom lakes with snakes. I guess that leaves out the bottom third of the country.

About the Virginia/NC lakes the poster above was referring to near Roanoke: Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke is huge and would fit the bill for what you're looking for, although it's getting built up pretty quickly. We've spent alot of time there since my parents have a place.

Buggs Island Lake and Kerr's Lake are actually different names for the same place - a huge sprawling lake on the NC/VA border. We have a house there and it's fabulous - great sandy bottom, great boating and swimming, The people there are pretty down-to-earth, there's not yachting clubs and that type of moneyed atmosphere - which is why we like it better than Smith Mountain Lake.

There are snakes in both but we never see them - snakes don't like people!
