Savannah is not actually located on the beach; it's on the river. The beach is probably 15-20 miles away . . . I thought I had the website bookmarked for their CVB but can't find it now . .. there are numerous elegant boutique hotels and B&Bs in the city, as well as the Hyatt and Westin; not sure what you'll find at the beach.
If you want a beach vacation, you might check out either Hilton Head or St Simons Island; either are about an hour from Savannah . .. and a search here will also turn up other options closer to Savannah. Enjoy!

Marriott or Westin in Hilton head are the two best hotels. Marriott is more in the thick of things than the Westin, but the Westin has the better reputation for service.
Savannah does have a beach--Tybee Island, on the Atlantic. Tybee was developed by Savannahians wanting summer places on the water, and is only 20 minutes from downtown, however, there are no hotels the caliber of the two mentioned above, nor are there the restaurants that you would have in HH. Savannah's restaurant scene centers around the historic district downtown, though one of my favorites, the Crab Shack, is out near Tybee.
