best Florida town for teenagers

We want to find a fun place in Florida to go for vacation with teens this summer ... besides Orlando ... with evening entertainment, beach, great shopping, and more teens ... not a retirement town ... We've done Panama City Beach. Any other ideas?

If you can travel up to an hour for the "great shopping" I'd suggest Ft. Myers Beach, which matches your other qualifications. I can never figure out where all those teens come from -- perhaps all the teens in Ft. Myers hang out there all summer?

My parents lived in Ft Myers, but my kids never liked the beach there. Too much traffic, t-shirt shops, etc. They liked Sanibel a lot, but their favorite beach is St Petersburg. We used the trolley a lot and there was lots to do.

I agree with LindaC about Fort Myers. The traffic is horrible and it seems to only get worse year after year. I would not consider it.

But we're not talking about staying in Ft. Myers and driving back and forth to Ft. Myers Beach -- I agree that would drive you crazy. (Although in summer it's no big deal -- winter is when the traffic is awful).

Was it the teens who objected to the business, the traffic, and t-shirt shops? If so, those are unusual teens, I'd say. Most would love that over secluded beaches. Guess it depends on the teens.

And if the traffic in Panama Beach didn't bother you in the summer, it's hard to imagine it will in Ft. Myers Beach!

Even the foot traffic at times is crazy on Fort Myers Beach.

OK, I'll step back and re-express myself. I agree Ft. Myers Beach is busy, it is pretty crowded and noisy in the summer. There are a lot of people on the beach -- playing games including a lot of volleyball. You may line up for a while at the ice cream places, and you may have to wait a little while to play miniature golf. The video game rooms will be full of teens. Go to Times Square (the center of Ft. Myers Beach) and there will be lots of people any time of day or night. At sunset the pier will be filled with people -- most of them teens and post teens. I may have misunderstood, because that's what I was suspecting the poster is looking for. As a teen I loved it -- and I would have HATED being "stuck" on a place like Sanibel. If instead they are looking for a quiet place without crowds and a lot of activities -- then by all means DO NOT GO to Ft. Myers Beach -- it is not a quiet little getaway by any stretch.

I said mine liked Sanibel....but for the best variety of things to do and see and ease of traveling (trolley) I'd pick St Pete.

I asked my husband about Daytona Beach, but he doesn't want to be on a beach that allows cars.

When we went to Panama City Beach, there was a lot of algae in the water. How is the water at St. Petersburg or Fort Lauderdale?

Just clarifying that you are saying St. Petersburg, not St. Pete Beach, correct?

I was just at St. Pete's Beach in late March and there was no red algae/seaweed problem. The beach and the water were beautiful.

I would recommend the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. Tons to do there -- beach-wise and sightseeing wise. The water is a Caribbean-like turquoise, especially in Miami. Key West might be a good option, too.

I would recommend the Tampa/Clearwater area. You have malls, beaches, Busch Gardents and Adventure Island. I think there is a little something for everyone. Don't forget to check out Ybor city too.

What do you think about Cocoa Beach? I think I want to find a big condo resort on the beach with lots to offer the teens, and I'm not having any luck finding that in Ft. Lauderdale or St. Petersburg areas. Destin looks like it gets a whole lot pricier.

Anyone have an opinion on Sanibel vs Marco for a family with two teenagers? I have a reservation at Sanibel Inn and the Hilton in Marco Island (late June). Looking for para-sailing, kayaking, nice beach, and no red tide. Thanks!
