Tampa to Fort Myers: Great Beaches

We will be in Tampa for a few days during which we will drive to Fort Myers one day.

Can you suggest a great beach near Tampa and/or a beach worth a stop on our way to or back from Fort Myers?

I'd head down through St. Pete and stop at Anna Marie Island -- beautiful beach. After than you need to head out to I-75 and then it's the better part of an hour both to and from a beach. Of course, Sanibel near Ft. Myers is fantastic too.
I'm lost what you mean about drive to Ft. Myers one day -- you don't mean there and back in one day do you? If so, that sure doesn't leave much beach time off the interstate.

Honeymoon Island State Park,
Dunedin, FL (go to the north end of the beach)
Fort Desoto Beach, St. Pete
Siesta Key Beach, Sarasota, FL
They are all beautiful!

I would just stay in the Tampa area.
Ft. Desoto park is our favorite beach in the area and Clearwater Beach is great too. It is a long drive to Ft. Myers.

But are you staying in Ft. Myers -- with a full day to get there from Tampa? Or is this a day trip, round trip Tampa to Ft. Myers?

NP, Thanks for your suggestions.

We have relatives who leave just north of Fort Myers and we hope to spend a night with them.

If that works out, we will spend some time on Sanibel Island, which as been long on our wish list.

Hello all, I will be traveling to Fort Myers from 2/17-2/27/09. Could you recommend the best beaches in terms of warmth and beauty for that time of year? Is the water warm enought to swim in on the SW coast. (I'm used to 65 degree water up in Jersey in the summmer). Willing to travel down to Naples and Marco Island. Any ideas for saving money there? Is the Entertainment book worthwhile for that area? Thanks very much in advance for your assistance and advice. howie67
