Best chicken fried steak

I love to see Fodorites recommendations about food. So, where is the best chicken fried steak? Ann's Chicken Fry in Oklahoma City is hard to beat! Also had a good one at Wunsche Brother's in Spring, Texas (breaded rib eye!). What are your favorite sides? I vote for mashed potatoes, cream gravy and green beans (large iced tea goes without saying)

I once had "chicken-fried Filet Mignon" at a restaurant on the San Antonio Riverwalk. It was $19. Thank goodness I was on expense account!

DeWese's Tip Top diner on Fredricksburg Road in San Antonio serves legendary CFS and onion rings.

Chicken-fried filet mignon? Why would anybody do that to a decent piece of meat? Don't get me wrong, I like the stuff to, but it's a way to make cheap meat taste decent.

The Tip Top diner sounds interesting--my sister and her husband live in San Antonio--I'll tell them about it. Was there last weekend--Rita's on the River for Mexican food!

I agree, Patrick!

My personal favorite is either Henry's in San Angelo, Texas or Mother's Daughter on Industrial in Dallas. Unfortunatley, CFS is not a low-fat food, and I am a true fan of it...

My vote goes to Goodson's Cafe in Tomball, Texas. Not only is there CFS delicious but the homemade rolls are amazing.

Matthews Cafeteria in Tucker, GA just east of Atlanta. Basic meat plus three with hefty portions. Each day of the week has the same menu (ex: every Monday has Chicken Fried Steak and every Thursday has Chicken and Dressing). Fantastic desserts (to die for banana pudding). Costs under 7 dollars, including your drink. The building leaves much to be desired, but it's still packed every day for lunch with suits down to daisy dukes.

There used to be this old fast food chain called "Grandy's" and sorry, but I liked theirs...they had everything from chicken, fried orka, beans, great rolls, etc. even chicken livers...for a fast food place it was pretty good, I remember when I was a teen there was one in my home town.

lol JoeG...... and Wednesday, is "orka" a misspelling of the vegetable or the mammal? and Ally, what do you suppose the fact that "Texas is winning out" has to say about texans?

actually, i've never had bad cfs in any number of truck stops i've eaten, regardless of location.

While I don't have it often, you can probably find great cfs at dozens of places in OK. Beside's Ann's, other top spots in OKC would be Sleepy Hollow, the County Line, and the Cimarron Steak House. As for sides, I absolutely will not have it without mashed potatoes and cream gravy. No way.
