Can anyone tell me what is the best broadway show to see in NYC right now?

Best Musical: The Producers
Best Comedy: Tale of the Allegist's Wife
Best Play: Proof

I'll agree with k's three choices.
However, there are other good shows, as well. And, in the case of The Producers, it's difficult to impossible to get tickets unless you want to wait in line for 8-10 hours or spend a lot of money.
So, other musicals (for which you can easily get tickets) that are certainly worth your time are: Cabaret, Chicago and Contact.

Yes, I might have to modify my answer and switch Noises Off for Tale of the Allergist's Wife (especially since Linda Lavin is no longer doing it), to totally agree with k and Howard. I have seen Noises Off many times, but not in New York. It is a wonderful show and all reports are that this production is one of the best, but I can't speak personally about it. Guess I'm due for another trip to NYC.

Better not Patrick, you know how bad those fights are getting a cab when you go to the theater! And God forbid you should check your coat somewhere,we will have to hear about another nightmare.

Never mind, Gavin. I made a mistake once in overstating a simple travel problem friends had and now will be reminded of it for life. NYer is just trying to reinforce the otherwise incorrect theory that New Yorkers are rude and obnoxious, by constantly proving that he is! Although I apologized for overstating the initial problem, he will not let go and will remain on my back no matter how helpful I try to be.
Pouring over the boards looking for my posts so he can continue being rude is much more important to him than actually reading posts and responding in a helpful way. Yes, his suggestions for the best Broadway show were good and helpful, weren't they?

Why did you log onto this question without offering any help? I would appreciate your mentioning the MANY other posts where my comments would be regarded as "pompous blitherings", top them if you like, and for the record, the reason that post was deleted was because of the people like you who turned it into some sort of contest, rather than a simple "heads up" like it was meant to be. Most recently you slammed me because I am not a New York resident so I couldn't possibly recommend a restaurant I have been to four times. Until then I was under the total misunderstanding that tourists could recommend to other tourists what they liked or didn't like. It was so considerate of you to explain that unless you live there you couldn't possibly know what was going on. And please, do you really believe that I'm not aware all these posts are from you, one person who seems to be obsessed with my posts? Have you seen a specialist? Since I am brave enough to use my real name and email, (unlike you) I would really appreciate a personal email to tell me what I have done that offends you so much, that you feel it necessary to attack every bit of helpful advice I try to give. Yes, as anyone can see, my original response to this question was totally pompous. I apologize.

I must have misunderstood Patrick's original post about the taxis and the coat check in New York. I thought the coat check deal had to do with a busy Tavern on the Green that wouldn't help his two lady friends get their coats and they had to leave to get to their Broadway show and return later to retrieve them. And I thought his post about the difficulty getting a taxi in Times Square had to do with other tourists, not New Yorkers fighting about who was first. As I recall a number of people agreed with him. I never saw him insult New Yorkers, in fact I remember him talking about how great and friendly the New Yorkers were. So what is all this retaliation deal about New Yorkers being offended with his posts? Am I wrong, or didn't he also live in New York at one time, and raved about how much he missed it?
To answer the original post, I think Patrick's original selections and Kt's and Howard's are all right. Although I loved Cabaret. It would be hard to top that in my opinion.

hundreds, perhaps thousands of taxis all full. Once in a while one would pull over and would be attacked by several people all fighting over it. I saw people literally pushing and shoving at each other and screaming obscenities saying they were first. We slowly made our way up to the restaurant and never were able to get a taxi

I'm not sure why they'd be offended unless they recognized themselves. As far as I know those were all other tourists from out of town. At least that would be my guess as to the bulk of the taxi seekers after a Broadway show. All I know is this was the truth. Sorry if it offended anyone who was like that. Maybe I'm not reading it right, but was there anything there than insulted New Yorkers?? Was I supposed to lie and say we walked out into the street, waved our hand and a taxi stopped to pick us up? Sorry, but I just described the actual scenario.

But where are all those other posts that you call "everywhere". I expect you can find at least a dozen or so more examples of my "pompous blitherings", but where are they since you say they are "everywhere". I guess I now know why you have taken me to task. You must be one of those people who do push and shove at taxis and yell obscenities. I always thought they were other tourists, but I guess you as a New Yorker have been discovered and so offended that your behavior has been recognized that now you feel committed to be nonforgiving. Otherwise I can't imagine why you'd be so offended as to take all this time to seek out all my posts. We already know that it isn't to add helpful comments, as you don't seem to do that. I have never accused New Yorkers of being rude, but I guess in your case I must make an exception. Most New Yorkers I have met have been kind and helpful. You, on the other hand, are indeed an exception. Any fine human being can let a problem go when it is explained or apologized for. You are certainly obsessed.
