Best BBQ in Oklahoma City?

I am heading to Oklahoma City next month and want to eat BBQ. What is your favorite BBQ joint?

Also, are there any foods or music which are
specific to Oklahoma?

It depends on who you ask. Leo's BBQ is a legend in the northeast side of town. Near the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is the County Line. On OKC's N. Western district, where the best local shops and restaurants are, is Earl's Rib Palace. That's where I'd go.

Country fried steak and fried okra are two mainstays. A great place to get these is Cimarron Steakhouse.

Oklahoma is best known for its country music stars, but I would argue that the three places where you'll find the best breakout talent is at the university programs (Oklahoma City University, University of Oklahoma), church groups, and small rock clubs. We have produced some wide ranging talent, from Broadway's Kristin Chenoweth to the Flaming Lips, from Garth Brooks to Color Me Badd, from Vince Gill to Megan Mullaly. You can throw in Reba McEntire, Brooks and Dunn, and All American Rejects. Our own Toby Keith will be opening a restaurant/music venue in Bricktown within a couple of years.

designmr's recommendation of Earl's on North Western (just north of 63rd) is an excellent one. I also like the County Line, which, even tho is a chain, is great. It's located on N.E. 63rd just east of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. (oops, just read that designmr wrote this, too. We think alike!) You can also go to the parking lot of many
grocery stores in town and get good barbeque to go!
Great local hamburgers: Johnnie's or Braum's dairy stores.
Chicken fried steak--Ann's Chicken Fry on NW 39th and Portland; Del Rancho.
Indian Fried Tacos--various places around town (a little drivethrough on N. MacArthur just south of NW 39th)
hope you have a good trip!

MzPossum, for the longest time, I didn't know where you could get Indian tacos, though they feel as Oklahoman as steak!! Thanks for telling us!!

OKC's specialty is just that - steak, I suppose. I would get steaks at Mickey Mantle's in Bricktown or the Deep Fork Grill on N. Western.

Dear enjoylife
Just wondering; have you made your trip to Oklahoma City yet? How was it? And, did you find good barbeque?

I am leaving for Oklahoma City Friday morning. Any last minute suggestions?

I am considering making a sidetrip to Stillwater? Any suggestions for things to do there?

Don't forget the walking paths at Lake Hefner if you have time--if you're there on a Sunday afternoon, there are sailboat races on the lake
Stillwater is home to Oklahoma State University--pretty campus. Hideaway Pizza best in the state. Eskimo Joes for good burgers (and a great T-shirt!)

Check out My Way, the tribute to Frank Sinatra at the Civic Center, or Schoolhouse Rock at the Lyric Theater.

Check out what's up and coming in Lower Bricktown before and after having your steak at Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse (or Lotus if you'd like sushi as well as steak). Have a nightcap at Maker's Lounge.
