Best Bay Area to Caspar Route?

Can anyone familiar with the mendocino area give me advice on driving up to Caspar this weekend?

I don't really care about scenic -- can you tell me which is quicker from 101: up highway 128 or over and down from Highway 20?

TIA!

I'm sure going 20 would be faster, since you are on the higher speed 101 for longer and 20 hits hwy just north of Caspar.

You'd miss the long drive through Boonville, Navarro and Mendocino.

Thanks -- that would be my guess too, but I can't tell from the map how great of a road Hwy 20 is, and MapQuest suggested the 128 route.

I went 101 to 128, and did it in 4 1/2 hours from San Jose. It was on a Friday afternoon, so we were in the Novato to Santa Rosa area in rush hour. 128 was the fun part and it went relatively quickly.

I drove Petaluma to Willits and over to Ft. Bragg in 3 hrs..
I have driven 128 also and still prefer the first mentioned..
Highway 20 is a two lane road with lots of passing lanes. There is abut 11 miles of "switch backs" which do slow you down. I still prefer first route
