BERKELEY HOTEL, RICHMOND, VA

Has anyone stayed at the Berkeley Hotel, Richmond, VA? (Located on 1200 East Cary Street, is this in a good location?) We're considering this for 4 women, & the suites have an additional sitting area (not just the standard bedroom)
Any comments would be appreciated.
(we'll be in Richmond, VA 10/6 - 10/10/2005)
If you had a preference, would you stay at the Berkeley Hotel, or the Omni Richmond (located near Shockoe Slip District), or the Commonwealth Park Suites (located at 9th & Bank streets, across the green from the State Capitol)
Thanks for the info!!

Hi, CJ - I live in Richmond, so can tell you first of all that the Berkeley & Omni hotels are catty-corner to each other, so only a couple of hundred feet apart for each entrance. (Berkeley fronts Cary Street, Omni probably 13th street, but they're neighbors.) excellent location for wandering Richmond's downtown - I'm a (20+) year transplant, and can't say enough good about visiting or living here.
Commonwealth Park Suites is a few blocks away, and for comfort level, wins handily. Haven't stayed there, but various friends have, and they do offer quite a bit of space. It's considered an overlooked jewel by most of us here, BUT I notice that you're here over a weekend. If you choose Cwealth Pk, I would have to say that you wouldn't want to be walking around late at night, which is a better option at the other 2 spots. Both Berkeley & Omni are a few doors from fun restaurants & bars, some (not huge #) of cute shops. Cwealth is not that far away, but is up in the totally business area, so you'd be fairly lonely & visible. Like most cities, Richmond does have some street crime at night, and I wouldn't wander from Shockoe area to Cwealth Park, personally, by foot late in the evening. I wonder if they have a courtesy car to pick you up and take you to spots? They may, in which case I'd call it a draw, and probably steer you to the Commonwealth.
Hope this helps. Jo Ann

I gotta ask - are you doming for the folk festival? Everyone here is getting REALLY exicted, the publicity push is really starting. If so, you can more easily walk to where the festival is from the Berkeley or Omni, down the canal walk jsut 2 blocks away. We are down there frequently for dinner, etc and I have never had any problems. I am sure there will be extra police on hand for the festival anyway, it is a really big deal that it is here this year!

JOY, & JO ANN, THANKS FOR THE INFO! We didn't know about the FOLK FESTIVAL, guess we lucked out! sounds fun! What more can you share about the festival, sounds like it's a good thing to be within walking distance. Are we talking huge crowds of people? are there craft booths, etc? thanks for all the info. We've reserved a room at the Berkely, just wanted some opinions. Guess we'll stay w/that, Omni is fairly booked, hard time accomodating 4 of us. Any other suggestions? thanks!

The website is www.nationalfolkfestival.com and here is a blurb from the info pagequot; The National Folk Festival celebrates the roots, richness and variety of American culture through music, dance traditional craft, storytelling and food. This event is a large-scale FREE three day event. The festival features over 250 of the nation's finest performing artists and crafts people, seven stages of continuous music and dance, craft exhibits and demonstrations, a Folk Arts Marketplace, children's area and delicious regional and ethnic foods. The National Folk Festival makes its debut this year on the banks of the beautiful James River in historic Richmond, Virginia."
One of my good friends has attended it in the past when it was in DC and says the crafts on sale are handmade in America and unique.
