There I can help you.Was there a couple of months ago, just overnight as a break from Charleston. Tried to get reservationas at the Rhett House Inn (apparently THE place to stay)but it was booked for a wedding so we stayed across the street at the Craven Street Inn. The young couple who ran the place weren't around very much in the evening but they were extremely helpful, charming, polite when they were there. Great great room and breakfast and just thinking about it now makes me want to go back. Beaufort is very small (at last the historic part is) so any inn (and I think there was a best western right there too) would be fine in terms of location.
I remember that the restauranst seemd pretty pricey for a southern small town (and I'm a New Yorker) but everything looked nice. We ate at a casual place called, i think, Plums, that had a very broad (but not huge) menu that included
interesting salads as well as higher priced huge entrees. Many restaurants such as this one have one entrance on the side or main street of town, and another on the waterfront. It was very crowded (on a Saturday night) but they fit us in without a reservation. I would
make reservations somewhere if I were going again to avoid the wait.
Make sure to take the time for a walking tour of all the old historic houses in the town (we borrowed a book from the inn that seemed to include almost every building on every street) including many sites from movies such as "The big Chill" "Prince of Tides" "Great Santini" and "Forrest Gump"--these weren't necessarily my favorite movies, but after we got home, I just had to rent them all again to recognize the locations!

Kate-In Beaufort briefly just 2 short weeks ago-the Historic area is lovely! Staying at a B&B is the way to go-The Rhett House Inn is beautiful, as is the Cuthbert House-across from the waterfront. Big old sprawling inn. We also ate at Plums-very casual, but the food was great. Recommend the crab cakes. And don't forget key lime pie for dessert!

Beaufort's web address is www.beaufortsc.org for all the helpful stuff you may need!

ENJOY
