Beach vacation on East coast, no further south than MD?

I am looking for suggestions for beach vacations on the East Coast, no further south than the MD/DC area. We have vacationed in NC the last two years and absolutely loved it but we're looking for a spot we can drive to in no more than 8 hours (we're in upstate NY). We love the quiet of Kure Beach, NC so we're hoping to find something similar, perhaps in NJ, MD or DE. We have nine year old twins and will also be bringing the grandparents along. Activities like museums or aquariums would be nice, but the most important feature is beachfront with water warm enough to swim. We'll be traveling in late August.

Thanks for any suggestions!

This could be a slight stretch of distance, but you might consider the Virginia beaches. I personally like Chincoteague. Good luck.

Cape May and Wildwood, NJ
If you get to go July/August. I'm not sure, but I would think the ocean water would be a bit shocking in June that far north. (Not at startling as Cape Code oceanside water, though!)

You might look at the Rhode Island coast. There are nice beaches and lots to see not too far away. There is a very nice aquarium in Mystic, CT just over the RI border and also Mystic Seaport. Plenty of fishing trips, or take the ferry to Block Island and bike to one of the nice beaches there.

In August the ocean waters in New Jersey are quite pleasant, but not so in New England...
the negative that time of year is that it can be extremely crowded...
Pt. Pleasant Beach has a lot of activites for children.

Ocean City MD is a zoo in August, but lots for kids to do. Nothing enlightening for adults. Bethany Beach and Rehoboth are smaller - same Ocean!
