Beach getaway near NYC

My husband and I want to get out of the NYC August heat for a weekend break at a moderately priced B&B at a nice nearby beach town. Any suggestions?

And we don't have a car, so must be reasonably accessible by public transport!

I can't think if anything moderately priced, but you might check Fire Island. I believe there are some B&Bs in Ocean Park or Saltaire (but these are party spots).

Another option might be one of the towns on the Jersey Shore that's reachable by NJ Transit (but I don't if any have B&Bs).

I think you can get to Block Island by public transit (LIRR to the North Shore ferry and then a bike once you get to Block Island).

I'm sorry, but I"m not much of a beach-goer, so I don't have many suggestions.

Have you done a search below on the Jersey shore?

(LI won;t do - since few prices are moderate - and B&Bs are typically in the towns -and you need a car to get to the beaches.)

Not sure what your idea of moderately priced is, but have a look at Spring Lake, NJ.

How about Shelter Island? Stay at Sunset Beach (not a B&B).

I wouldn't call Sunset Beach moderate by any stretch at $450480/night on a weekend in season with a minimum 2 night stay.
