Bars With Atmosphere in NYC

My spouse and I will be in NYC for a weekend this Fall...our 3rd weekend trip in 2 years. Each time, we add items to our "next time" wish list. So, Next Time, we'd like to go to a bar or lounge after dinner that is OK for a middle-aged couple who are, of course, cool and hip and feel 35; that doesn't require fancy clothes, that has live music, and has that indescrible New York City atmosphere and vibe. Midtown, Upper West Side, the West Village ... New Yorkers, where would you take your old fogey friends from out of town that want a taste of the night life?!

Joe's Pub at the Public Theater on Lafayette is a great performance space. I brought my parents there last summer before dinner (Indochine across the street is an excellent place) and they looooved it. Check out their website for listings.

I second the motion for Joe's Pub but be advised that i'ts very small. If there's a live music act scheduled you'll need to reserve in advance and should also plan on standing in line before doors open. There are precious few tables inside, many of which are sometimes reserved for industry people or guest of the performers. Ther eare some other places to sit on the upper level near the bar but seats go quickly. That said.... it's a great room and IMHO probably the best place in the city hear jazz or cabaret music. great line of sight to the stage form most spots, very intimate atmosphere and the sound is incredible.

I would recommend Cafe Des Artistes. Upper West Side. or The restaurant One if By Land Two If By Sea...very romantic...has a nice size Mahaghony bar and live music...The street that the restaurant is located on really gives one the feeling of Old time NY...

There are several places I can think of like Don't Tell Mama, a smallish cabaret spot where you can hear up and comming singers. It is located on Restaurant Row, in the Times Square area.

Another suggestion is a new place I found recently right on 34th St. between Madison and Fifth on the south side of the street. Live music evenings and the menu looks fun, some fondue and light dinner. Can't remember the name of the place, sorry, but have heard good things about and we enjoyed our evening there.

You might pick up a New York Magazine, which will have listing of everything from Jazz to Classical.

Have a great time.
