Hi All:

My parents are driving from Virginia to WY and stopping in the Dakotas for a few days -- mainly to see Mt Rushmore and The Badlands, I know nothing about either state and wonder if it's even possible to stay in between or would that be too much driving?

If it is possible, what towns would you look in? They have been staying 1 night at east place to date and would love to try to stay 2 or 3 in one place, if possible.

I'm in Zion on vacation myself right now and have no idea what to suggest to them.

OK you can see how absolutely ignorant I am of the areas ... apparently both are in SD. I am so sorry if I offended anyone!

Actually, there are Badlands National Parks in both states, which many people don't realize. North Dakota Badlands are in/around Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park (Red hues; think Grand Canyon colors) - while the South Dakota Badlands (white, chalky-tan colors) are an hour's drive from Rapid City/Black Hills areas along I-90.
I would suggest staying in either Hill City, Custer or Keystone. These are small, comfortable towns centralized to most area attractions.

Hill City is a good choice but not that big. I can recommend the Coyote Blues B&B. Another good choice would be Rapid City as it has lots of restaurants and hotels and is centrally located.

They will be able to drive through Badlands NP on their way to Mt. Rushmore (assuming they time it for daylight hours). Plan on spending several hours if not longer.

If for some reason they want to stay 1 night in/near Badlands, there is lodging with the park (Cedar Pass lodge) and directly outside in the tiny town of Interior. Next closest is in Wall, less than 10 miles from the Pinnacles entrance.

However, since it sounds like they would prefer to avoid switching hotels, best bet is to stay in the Black Hills. Keystone is closest to Mt. Rushmore. Custer would be good if they are also visiting Custer State Park.

I'd recommend staying in Custer State Park and driving to the Badlands either on the way there or on the way back. It's not central, but there is a lot to see at the Park region including Mt Rushmore and lots of hiking and wildlife.

Rapid City is the best. Right by major roads to get to places quickly....plenty of places to stay/eat...and close to the airport for easy get-a-way!
