Turn off data roaming and limit yourself to short calls and text messages. If you are traveling for more than 2 weeks, consider buying a cheap phone here so you can make U.S. calls. That will cost about $30 to $40. You can buy a phone at almost any drugstore.

The possible store that should carry them include Walgreens, CVS, Target, Walmart and 7-11. Just be aware that, unlike Oz, you will be charged for incoming calls.
