Australian Mobile Phone use in USA

What is the safest way to use an Australian mobile in USA without incurring huge data download costs. I only need the phone for calls not internet connect or other applications.

Turn off data roaming and limit yourself to short calls and text messages. If you are traveling for more than 2 weeks, consider buying a cheap phone here so you can make U.S. calls. That will cost about $30 to $40. You can buy a phone at almost any drugstore.

Be sure to review this very recent thread: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...omment-7088725

The possible store that should carry them include Walgreens, CVS, Target, Walmart and 7-11. Just be aware that, unlike Oz, you will be charged for incoming calls.

If that doesn't suit your needs, check out www.net10.com

It's a service I use. It's good, and it's not expensive.
