Austin Restaurants (no TexMex)

We're taking my son's friends out for dinner in Austin. We'll be a group of seven but my husband dosn't like Mexican or TexMex. We need a downtown location. Any suggestions for a steakhouse or American type place? Thanks so much.

We found Eddie V's Edgewater Grille (right in downtown) excellent. Seafood and steaks. High quality. Nightly live band.

Lamberts - they take (and I recommend) reservations. Not a steakhouse but "downtown Bar-b-que"

There is also a Sullivans, Flemings and Roy's downtown. They are chains but...

Iron Works is good for bar-b-que; Kerbey Lane Cafe and Magnolia Cafe for lighter, home-style meals; Home Slice Pizza for good pizza and atmosphere. There are many to choose from. Depends upon your price range and type. Enjoy!

Shoreline Grill. Next to the 4 Seasons on Town Lake about a block off Congress. Beautiful views, great food and the terrace is really enjoyable if weather's good. Regional and American specialities.

I'll second Eddie V's.

If you would like Italian I highly recommend Vespaio on S. Congress. It's south of downtown about 5 minutes by car. Enoteca, their bistro restaurant next door is excellent, too.

Austin360.com, Chowhound.com and Texas Monthly are all good sources for Austin restaurant reviews.

Trio in the Four Seasons hotel is fantastic. Their steaks as well as their other entrees are just the best.
