from Yosemite to Las vegas/ GCNP - late APRIL. Which way to drive ?

Im planning a trip to US, from 22-Apr-10.
I planning to be in Yosemite area ~26-28/Apr and then Im planning to go to Las Vegas or Grand canyon.
I understood Tioga road is closed in this period and I would like your driving suggesions.
BTW - does it mean I cant see the DV NP?
What about sedona?
I will be ahppy to hear evry recommendation you have.
one more question - Lake tahoe at this period - is it still snowing usually? worth to visit?

Thanks, Shani

Lake Tahoe can be quite cold in April. The snow is normally gone from the road, but you can get snowstorms that time of year. You need to be prepared with warm clothing to visit Tahoe in April.

Your options are to go north, along Highway 99 (or I-5) to Highway 50 over the Sierras, to South Lake Tahoe, then down Highway 395.

Or go south through Bakersfield. YOu can get to Death Valley NP via Mohave/Ridgecrest.

Grand Canyon is a 4+ hour drive from Las Vegas. It is worth an overnight there to see the sunset/sunrise. Do you have accommodations there? The in-park accomodations can book up a year in advance.

How much time do you have for all of this? You have a great deal of driving ahead of you. Sedona is about 4 hours south of Grand Canyon. Without knowing how much time you have for this trip, it is difficult to say it is worth it.

Tell us more about your trip -- where are you traveling from to get to Yosemite and where would you go after Las Vegas. That could make a difference re what is the best way to get to LV.

For instance - if you are visiting San Francisco and then driving to LV -- you might want to consider taking the car back to SFO or San Jose and then flying to Las Vegas. You could rent a different car in LV and visit Death Valley from the east.

Otherwise you will either drive around the north via Lake Tahoe and 395 - a very pretty but long trip. . . .

Or

Around the south via Bakersfield which is a long and mostly ugly drive.

All in all I have 19 days.
Im landing on Apr-22 and traveling back on 12-May.
My arrival and departure are from LA.

I as thinking of LA
Day 1 - Universal studios LA
Day 2-3 - Road #1 towards San Fransisco
Day 4 - 15.. open for any suggestion (Take into account I like to be in Grand Canyon 1 day, Bryce and Zion.. 1 day each)
day 16-18 Las Vegas
Day 19 - driving back to LA

Appreciate your help,
Shani

South from Yosemite via Bakersfield, Mojave, Barstow and Baker is the shortest route, but not at all an attractive drive, and you can drive to Death Valley from Baker.
Much more attractive, but longer, drive is north via SR 88 or US 50 into Gardenerville or Carson City and then 395 south. If you take that route, you can get to Death Valley by turning at Lone Pine. then after the park you can get into LA via Parhump.

If I go with your ssuggested drive (the longer one), by how much you estimate it? 2 days drive with stops? more?
and the road are open?
